8 posts | 10 read | 5 to read
Youllnever think of bees, their keepers, or the fruits (and nuts) of their laborsthe same way again. Trevor Corson, author of The Secret Life of LobstersAward-winning journalist Hannah Nordhaus tells the remarkable story of John Miller, one of Americas foremost migratory beekeepers, and the myriad and mysterious epidemics threatening American honeybee populations. In luminous, razor-sharp prose, Nordhaus explores the vital role that honeybees play in American agribusiness, the maintenance of our food chain, and the very future of the nation. With an intimate focus and incisive reporting, in a book perfect for fans of Eric Schlossers Fast Food Nation, Michael Pollans The Botany of Desire, and John McPhees Oranges, Nordhauss stunning expos illuminates one the most critical issues facing the world today, offering insight, information, and, ultimately, hope.

I found out about this book from a podcast I was listening to while my roommate drove us across Wyoming. I knew it would be interesting but I was not looking forward to how depressing it would have to be. It‘s a balanced book of portraits of beekeepers, some light science, some light history. It reads like a long magazine article. The book sheds light in an accessible way on many of the assorted reasons for the imported honey bee‘s challenges.

jmofo Audiocleaning and completing #triplespin or #bookspinbonanza ? Both? Who knows!? I leap-frogged a bit because I typically have at least one paper book and one audiobook going at once. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Great review!! And good progress on the bonanza!! 4y

Everything you didn't know you wanted to know about industrial beekeeping. An educational and sometimes humorous look at the complex world of beekeeping, environmental impacts hurting bees, and bees impact on other areas of agriculture. Quick informative read. I didn't know how much i didn't know about industrial beekeeping... i don't think i even knew there was such a thing as industrial beekeeping. Lol.. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

Suet624 Come to think of it, I had never thought of industrial beekeeping either! 5y

Many of you might not know this about me, but I absolutely LOVE bees! I love seeing them on the lavender in the garden, and I always get as close to them as I can without disturbing them. They‘re so important to the environment, they‘re amazing, and they‘re beautifulI just adore them! 💗🐝 So naturally I couldn‘t pass up on today‘s Audible daily deal. It‘s all about bees and their plight.

Momreviews My husband and I have had as many as31 hives for over 40 years. They are one of natures greatest gifts. 7y
GypsyKat @Momreviews That‘s amazing!!! I love that! 💗🐝 7y

GypsyKat @Sarah83 I think I‘ll pass on that one. I love bees, so a book that vilifies them is probably not something I would enjoy. But thanks anyway. 7y
Sarah83 Ok. 👍 7y
AlaMich I‘ve been kind of fascinated ever since I read The Bees by Laline Paull. The book itself was terrific and it also made me see bees in a whole new light. 😊 7y

Day21 #readjanuary #atopicyoudliketoknowmoreabout I took a look at my Kindle to see what subjects I had multiple books about and some possibilities were WWII, Pearl Harbor, Hawai'i History, Serial Killers, Introverts & Personality Types, Nutrition, and Honeybees-which seemed like a fun pick for this theme. 🐝🐝🐝All of these are in my #TBR stack. Granted 'The Bees' is fiction, but I think it fits with the other two. Save the honeybees! 🐝🐝🐝

Bette The Bees surprised me, liked it a lot. So different. 👍❤️️😊 8y
MiqueMarie The Bees is fantastic! 8y
DebinHawaii @Bette @lazuliwaves83 I need to move it up in my TBR! 🐝👍 8y
Texreader My dad was a fairly successful hobbyist beekeeper so I grew up amongst bees, beehives, extracting honey, the works. ❤️ bees. Is this a book for me? 8y
DebinHawaii It is still on my TBR so I am not sure but I've heard good things. I was interested in the honeybees' role in agriculture. 👍 8y

Some bee facts from The Beekeeper's Lament: Wild honey bees are basically extinct in the US because of the varroa mite, which is more deadly than Colony Collapse Disorder. 🐝
