In A Country Of Mothers
In A Country Of Mothers | A.M. Homes
2 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
For Claire Roth, an established psychotherapist with an adoring husband and children, her new patient - Jody Goodman, a witty and attractive young filmmaker - is a welcome diversion from her predictable life. Jody, successful, yet uncertain, is disarmed by Claire's interest and approval. Gradually, the lines between friendship and family, between love and compulsion, start to blur - especially when one of them starts to believe fanatically that some things simply cannot be coincidences, and that what they share, in fact, is the deepest bond of all. In a Country of Mothers is a transfixing psychological thriller, and with it A. M. Homes forces us to confront our own judgements about sanity, danger and desire.

5-7-24: My 12th finished book of 2024! I love A.M.Homes. Claire is a therapist who is married with 2 sons. Back in 1966, she was forced to give her daughter up for adoption. Jody is a twenty-something film intern/student who becomes Claire‘s patient and her obsession. Could Jody be Claire‘s long lost daughter? Homes always make you feel uncomfortable, which feels real. I love that about her. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣1️⃣2️⃣

A Manhattan therapist starts to think her new patient might be the daughter she gave up for adoption two decades ago. But how can she be sure? In the events that follow all patient-therapist boundaries are completely erased, as Homes explores the complications inherent in the institutions of psychotherapy and adoption. I liked how the drama doesn't stay within the boundaries of realism when more interesting psychological territory can be revealed.
