Reagan
Reagan: The Life | H.W. Brands
4 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
From master storyteller and New YorkTimes bestselling Historian H. W. Brands comes the definitive biography of avisionary and transformative president In his magisterial new biography, H. W. Brands brilliantly establishes Ronald Reagan as one of the two great presidents of the twentieth century, a true peer to Franklin Roosevelt. Reagan conveys with sweep and vigor how the confident force of Reagans personality and the unwavering nature of his beliefs enabled him to engineer a conservative revolution in American politics and play a crucial role in ending communism in the Soviet Union. Reagan shut down the age of liberalism, Brands shows, and ushered in the age of Reagan, whose defining principles are still powerfully felt today. Reagan follows young Ronald Reagan as his ambition for ever larger stages compelled him to leave behind small-town Illinois to become first a radio announcer and then that quintessential public figure of modern America, a movie star. When his acting career stalled, his reinvention as the voice of The General Electric Theater on television made him an unlikely spokesman for corporate America. Then began Reagans improbable political ascension, starting in the 1960s, when he was first elected governor of California, and culminating in his election in 1980 as president of the United States. Employing archival sources not available to previous biographers and drawing on dozens of interviews with surviving members of Reagans administration, Brands has crafted a richly detailed and fascinating narrative of the presidential years. He offers new insights into Reagans remote management style and fractious West Wing staff, his deft handling of public sentiment to transform thetax code, and his deeply misunderstood relationship with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, on which nothing less than the fate of the world turned. Reagan is a storytelling triumph, an irresistible portrait of an underestimated politician whose pragmatic leadership and steadfast vision transformed the nation. From the Hardcover edition.

Pickpick

This book doesn‘t just tell you about Reagan, it tells you about America too. It makes you understand why Reagan changed from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party. You understand the Cold War, even from Gorbachev‘s POV. Brands draws parallels between Reagan and FDR. Everything is laid out in solid, readable, detail. Excellent biography! I‘ve already stacked H.W. Brands‘ other works. 4/44 #PresidentialBiographies

Crazeedi I'll have to look into this one! 6y

Just got back from a long and wonderful vacation. The train was great. I had a little wine and watched the world go by but mostly spent quality time it's Mr. Z and a pile of books. He's pretty happy here with his coffee, a good view, and big fat book.

Now I need to try to catch up on everything I missed here. I missed you all! 😍

Zelma @8little_paws and @CherylDeFranceschi we were so busy with wedding festivities and family that I didn't get any extra friend time. However, I will likely be back in June and will definitely email you then! 👍 8y

My favorite President. Long dense book but well worth the read if you have an interest in the presidency, politics and how past events shape the present. It is more a history of Reagan than a biography as it's more about what he did than who he was. #80s
