The debut of an astonishing new literary talent, Rain proves that Gunn is already a master of her craft. Twelve-year-old Janey and her younger brother, Jim, spend summers at a lake with their parents. Ignored for long stretches and then called upon suddenly to mix drinks or receive drunken kisses, the children huddle together in tenderness, protecting each other from the unpredictable moods of the dark adult world that surrounds them.

I definitely need a lighter read now. This was grey and melancholy and 💔.
The writing was beautiful and the story uncomfortable.
A short story for me!

Reggie So much water, and I loved the bits about the mom and the dad, how she was only attainable for a certain part of the day right before the party, and how the little girl would tell the brother stories that were from his pajamas....but that ending😭😭😭. 5y
Reggie I‘m glad it was a pick for you!!! 5y
TrishB I was reading the ending on the bus!!! 😥😥 had to go back and read it later to absorb it properly. A powerful little read. 5y

@Centique Thanks for putting this out there! Have you ever read The Lover by Marguerite Duras? I feel like they are in the same vein of work. Short, strong sense of setting. Not really a story but images that leave an impression and subtly pull emotion. I think you would like it. This was a sister‘s tale of love for her brother and their playful childhood imagination that couldn‘t save them from everything one summer. Sooo good.

Centique Oh wow! You found it 😁 You are a legend Reggie. I‘m so glad you liked it. It‘s still stirring feelings in me, this one. 💔 6y
Centique And YES I loved The Lover. I only read it a year or two ago and I think it‘s one of my all time favourites now 😍 6y
Reggie @Centique yeah, the part where he sneaks into bed with her and she tells him a story that leapt right off his pajamas because it was about cowboys and Indians, she just has great descriptive scenes. Although, there were times I felt I was gonna get choked out by all that description of lakes, streams, the little puddles where they stuck their toes to see if minnows would nibble, I guess that was kinda the point, huh? So sad there at the end. 6y

Centique @Reggie I know right? There was that tension with the water from the start. And NZ does have a LOT of water! Then that ending was so tough to read. You wouldn‘t believe it but I gave CPR to my mother when I was 21 (she‘d had a cardiac arrest) i kept her going until the ambulance arrived (she lived another 5 yrs) - so that ending felt very real. 6y
batsy The Lover! So, so good. 6y
TrishB Stacked, due to cover love. 6y
Reggie @Centique You‘re amazing, Paula. Most of us think you‘re just an NZ mom of 2 who likes to read but your that everyday hero nobody knows about. That ending was very IN THE MOMENT. Oof. 6y
Reggie @batsy I think you‘d like this one. @TrishB it is striking. 6y
Centique @Reggie aw you‘re so lovely 😘 6y

This little novella was both rich and unsettling. It doesn‘t have the arc and plot line of a novel, more a series of memories, almost dreamlike, of a childhood‘s summers spent by the lake. The children watch their parents crumbling marriage, hide from the bewildering chaos of night after night of adult parties. Most of all this captures the love of a big sister for her little brother. As a big sister myself it felt exactly right. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Centique This is a hard to find gem I expect - published in 1994, from the oldest part of my TBR! 6y
Reggie Even if said brother crashed tea parties with his GI Joes? Lol. I‘m gonna look it up because plotless well written short books seem to be my jam this month. 6y
Centique @Reggie great memory about the GI Joes! Funny how I kind of adore my brother now 😂😂 6y
