I found the author condescending at times when talking about the intelligence of other nationalities...very "of their time" sentiments. The sailing talk was authentic but nearly impenetrable. Read this in print or as a properly divided serial; the formatting in the Gutenberg version was wonky.

So annoying when your copy of a book has pages missing! This reminded me of the M*A*S*H episode "The Light That Failed", where the whole camp was reading a mystery only to discover that the last page was missing ?
I giggled. Because the officers' quarters are toward the back of the ship, having too many officers would weigh the ship down (at least figuratively).
