Ghosting: A Double Life | Jennie Erdal
8 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
Jennie Erdal worked for nearly fifteen years for the flamboyant, extravagant, larger-than-life Tiger, a London publisher, entrepreneur, and media personality. Officially, she was his personal editor. In truth, Erdal was his ghostwriter and alter ego. Under his name, she produced not only newspaper columns, business columns, and novels, but even love letters. In temperament, the two couldnt have been more different. Yet their relationship weathered storms of all kinds, from temper tantrums to serious financial reversals, with a tenacious bond that is both a wonder and an enigma. With effortless grace, gentle erudition, and wry humour, Erdal shows us vivid snapshots of an austere childhood in Scotland and of the London publishing world, peopled by the elegant and the Oxbridge-educated. She introduces us to a thoughtful girl who found her passion in language and the magic of words, a passion that led her by a series of chance events to the publishing house, and the strange, wonderful, and never-dull world of the inimitable Tiger. As original as it is elegant and witty, Ghosting is a remarkable memoir more than just one womans story, it is the tale of her double life, as well as a fascinating glimpse into the symbiotic relationship between two very unusual people. From the Hardcover edition.

I really enjoyed this book. It‘s been a long time since I felt so “carried along” on the journey.

“As it says in the stone garden in Kyoto: you are here. This is now.” Reading by the fire on a Sunday afternoon is a wonderful here and now.

Adding Wiesbaden to my Frankfurt/Heidelberg literary inspired wanderlust

Reading about the Frankfurt Book Fair for the first time in this book and it‘s making me want to go! I have a group of friends from an online book group that pre-pandemic would meet up at different US book festivals. I have a friend researching in Heidelberg that I had hoped to visit while she is there. . So, who knows if the world isn‘t a shambles then, perhaps I can make this dream for October 2023!

All narratives are suspect, unreliable. The stories we tell to make sense of our lives are essentially made up. We tell these stories to protect ourselves from the existential nightmare scenario- the idea that our lives have no pattern, are going nowhere… The concept of randomness is hard to bear, so the mind scampers around to impose a structure

LeahBergen Ahhh, a Slightest Foxed edition! 😍 3y
Sapphire @LeahBergen yes, I love it. I am finding this my favorite size, cover and shape of book to read. I am quite intrigued by the business model. 3y

Another #HolidayMovie viewing, this one feels more hip than Hallmark. Sounds like fun though! #WinterGames #TeamElectricSex

It‘s always a rough start after a three day weekend. Today, I have a long list of to do‘s - with an iced latte in hand, and my notebook full of scribbled reminders I‘m well on my way and it‘s only noon! On a different note, I cracked open the new Slightly Foxed edition, ‘Ghosting‘ by Jennie Erdal last night, and it‘s a treat to read. I might try to sneak in a chapter or two before I get back to the tasks at hand this afternoon.
