The Wild Swans
The Wild Swans | Peg Kerr
10 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
This novel focuses on two outcasts on two journeys in two eras. In 1689 England, Lady Eliza Grey's 11 brothers are turned into swans. Rejected by her father, Eliza is flown to America by her brothers where she has a chance to save them--until she is accused of witchcraft. In the second story, set in 1981 New York, Elias Latham has AIDS, is banished from his father's house, and must learn to live on the streets. Like Eliza, Elias struggles to understand the suffering he must endure.

Surprise book mail is the best kind of book mail! Thank you so much @silentrequiem for this signed (!!!!) copy. So super thoughtful of you and since it was wrapped I figured it was probably a birthday gift, but I couldn‘t wait for over two more weeks to open it. 😂 Thank you, friend! 💕

I finally finished @WeeziesBooks's pick for #readersgonnaread (it will mail out Monday!) so sat down and read the comments for my pick. Thankfully, my copy was found and made it's way home to me, along with the original journal. I ripped out the pages from the replacement and taped them into the 1st. I admit, I partly choose this book because I knew it was polarizing. The reactions didn't disappoint. Some loved it, some were so-so. ⬇️

silentrequiem I am so glad I got to share this book with you all, and to read your selections. I love postal book club because you read outside your comfort zone. 5y
silentrequiem And gold star to @whippoorwill815 for catching on the reincarnation bit. It took me several re-reads before that aha! moment for me. 💫 5y

Pickpick

This book is a perfect example of why I love postal book clubs. I had never heard of it, probably never would have picked it up, and was not drawn in by this cover at all... but I ended up loving Debbie‘s pick for #ReadersGonnaRead.

Not a perfect book, but still very good. I love a well-done fairytale retelling, and this one is cleverly weaved in with a story from the early 80s onset of the AIDS epidemic. Heartbreakingly beautiful.❤️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I realized tonight that one of my favorite (long out-of-print) books must have ended up in one of the donation boxes that went to the used book store.

Amazon to the rescue!

VeganCleopatra I haven't read this but I've been very interested. I've had a seller copy in my amazon cart for weeks trying to decide if they price for new was worth it. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
silentrequiem @VeganCleopatra It's one of my favorite books. It was written in the late 90s but I think holds up very well. The used copies are very reasonable. 6y
VeganCleopatra Have you ever read The Daughter of the Forest? It is based on the same fairytale. 6y

silentrequiem @VeganCleopatra I started the audiobook years ago but hated th narrator so gave up. I never tried again. Is it worth the read? 6y
VeganCleopatra It's one of my favorite books but obviously everyone is different. I have listened to parts via audiobook and I'm not a huge fan either. I definitely preferred the physical book. 6y
silentrequiem @VeganCleopatra Monotone narration is awful! I'll have to pick up a print copy then. 6y
VeganCleopatra It sucks when AB narrators ruin a book! And you just never really know if you would have enjoyed it otherwise. 🤷‍♀️ 6y

One of my favorite books. I wanted to re-read it but my copy was across the country. So I just bought a second copy, as one does.

I adore #fairytaleretellings. The hardest part for today's #photoadaynov16 was deciding which ones to pick.

Eyelit Love most of these and added the rest to my tbr - but what is the book in the lower right corner? 8y
silentrequiem @Eyelit Mechanica by Betsy Cornwell. A Cinderella retelling with a feminist twist. 8y
