A topic about Asian diaspora for Asian heritage month had me thinking about how Singaporeans are Asian diaspora too, although Singapore is located in Asia. For instance, my great-grandparents migrated from China to Singapore and while I may still have distant relatives in China, I haven‘t been there and have no plans to. Anyway, just highlighting some Singapore lit from shelves today.

#RedRoseSeptember Day 13: I found myself drawn to practically all the stories in this collection, Ministry of Moral #Panic from Singapore. While there was that studied restraint in the writing, I felt that Koe was boldly reshaping boundaries in her narratives, pushing and pulling into issues otherwise perceived to be too controversial to be articulated – be it maid-employer dalliances and same-sex relationships. I didn't read as many books in August as in July - prob because of returning from Singapore and all that jetlag (more of helping the kids get over theirs!). But I did read some amazing books.
Ministry of Moral Panic - excellent short stories by a Singaporean
Everything We Lost - surprising coming-of-age
Packing for Mars - Mary Roach is always awesome
Court of Mist and Fury - sooooo gooooooood!!!!!

Short story collections are usually slow reads for me but this one I just keep reading, story after story. I love the writing and its Singapore flavour.
And also this very Singapore breakfast - teh C siu dai (milk tea, less sugar), soft-boiled eggs and (not pictured) kaya toast
