19 posts | 13 read | 17 to read
On 1st January 1906, Edith Holden made the first entry in a diary which was to record the countryside through the changing seasons of that year. It was initially written to encourage her pupils at Solihull school to learn more about nature.

Finished reading this beautiful book tonight. It makes me want to get out and explore some nature before the big heat comes in with summer. Seeing as we are being told to expect some nastiness weather wise, oh and snakes, I do not want to meet any snakes in the heat

#NationalBirdDay #JanuaryJazz @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Continuing my tradition of starting each month by reading its short beautiful chapters.

AllDebooks I love this book for so many reasons. Not only for it's beautiful illustrations and nature writing. It was my Mum's favourite, flicking through it always reminds me of her. 😍 2y
IndoorDame @AllDebooks that‘s a beautiful connection with your mom ❤️ 2y
AllDebooks @IndoorDame I need a new copy, worn mine out. It's a second hand copy and it's starting to get mildew 2y

IndoorDame @AllDebooks definitely a book worth replacing so you have a lovely copy! I bought this one new, so I know it‘s still in print and easy to come by, but I‘ve also seen lots of clean used copies pop up over the years if a slightly worn one would do more to remind you of your mother. 2y
AllDebooks @IndoorDame Absolutely. I'm always amazed how non-readers don't understand how important books are to us. They're so much more than just stories. They're all associated with different memories and times in our lives. X 2y
Eggs @IndoorDame Beautiful! 2y
Eggs @AllDebooks Agreed on the importance of books to memory/associations 🧡 2y

And coughing drowns the parson‘s saw,
And birds sit brooding in the snow,
And Marion‘s nose looks red and raw.”

Happy December Littens!
I hope everyone enjoys the winter season, whatever that means to you 🤍❄️

I try to pull this book down off the shelf at the start of every month and spend some time rereading that month‘s entry. I find it helps center me.

I'm happy! 💜

Finally, I have for my collection a first edition (1977) of this book that is in good shape! It arrived from England, and is a treasured gift. I love Edith Holden's artistry and connection to nature throughout.

A detailed illustration by Edith Holden for this month. Whether it be the Edwardian era or current times, still lovely.

This is her more well-known country diary, published in 1906. Compared to the other, this has a lot more information/writing and many more beautiful illustrations like this one. Lovely, easy reading.

Jess_Read_This Oh! I've wanted a copy of this for ages. I heard it's gorgeous and a great read! 8y
LauraBrook @Laura317 @Jess_Read_This It's really beautiful, and in an age where so much of our knowledge world is acceded with texhnology, it's wonderful and amazing that she saw and noticed (and knows things) and then could remember to not just write it all down (common and Latin names) and illustrate so accurately too. Just a beautiful thing. Hope you both can get your hands on a copy! 8y

This beautiful #memorablememoir inspired me to learn more about our calendar. Everything about it is fascinating! Roman history and mythology, the origins of our holidays and weather lore. There was so much I didn't know! Like, where the name January came from. ❤️ this book. #booktober
