The thriller that inspired the classic movie: Caught in an international conspiracy, a mans only choice is to runRosenbaum is stuck in traffic on the Upper East Side when the heat gets the better of him. A Volkswagen has stalled out in the middle of 87th Street, and even when its elderly German driver gets it going, Rosenbaum cannot contain his rage. With one shocking act, he initiates a chain of events that spell doom for Babe Levy.A PhD candidate and aspiring marathon runner, Babe is driven by shame over his fathers suicide. Smart, fit, but incredibly awkward, he cant get a date and hes got a nagging toothache. But his troubles are about to get a whole lot worse. Just back from a visit to the dentist for a replacement filling. It wasn't quite Marathon Man level, but more than I'd bargained for and I was a bit longer than expected in the dentist's chair. Fortunately my dentist, Rebecca, is not the White Angel, and it was safe! Now I'm waiting for the anaesthetic to wear off so that I can eat some breakfast.

Suet624 ☹️😭😳 2y
bibliothecarivs I'm a big fan of Olivier but I've never seen MM. 2y
Graywacke Never fun. Glad you‘re past the worst of it. 2y

Bookwomble @bibliothecarivs The whole cast in this film put in magnificent performances; Olivier was nominated for an Oscar. You should try to see it 😊 The book is fab, too. 2y
Bookwomble @Graywacke No! I not an antidentite, so I don't mind going, but fun it ain't! Feeling slightly mauled now the anaesthetic has worn off, but I imagine my remaining pegs will settle down soon 😁 2y
The_Book_Ninja Every time I go to The Prince Charles Cinema, I write Marathon Man on the request chalk board. I‘ve seen this film more times than any other but never on the big screen. It‘s in my top 4 on my Letterboxd 2y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Maybe one day they'll show it for you🏃‍♂️📽️ You know what would make a good double bill with MM? The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3. Another good ensemble cast. Roy Scheider in one, Robert Shaw in the other, so I guess you could make it a triple and put Jaws on, too 😄 2y
The_Book_Ninja Jaws is my wife‘s favourite film. It‘s coming to the IMAX: Waiting for the release date with excitement! 2y
tpixie @Bookwomble yes! Both the book and movie were incredible! They have stayed with me for decades… 3mo
Bookwomble @tpixie Agreed 😊 I think this is one of Hoffman's best performances. Goldman's book is cinematic in its unfolding, which isn't surprising, I guess, from an award winning screenwriter. 3mo
tpixie @Bookwomble yes! I agree to all! 3mo

That was an unexpected ending and pleasant twist in the middle! A great story about espionage and the realization that you never truly know someone until it's too late. The references are quite dated and the racial epithets a bit heavy but if you can see past those, a great read! I'm just sorry I didn't pay closer attention early on!

I'm about 30% into this and I'm super confused but chugging along. This has been my bedtime read so maybe that's why I'm not feeling it? I'm not really feeling much of anything these days... full on quarantine slump... 🚽

I re-read this book because I ran across the movie on TV a few weeks ago. I recall reading it when it came out, in 1974, and enjoying it. Goldman was a good writer and this thriller is a page turner. Brilliant doctoral student with mysterious older brother runs up against sadistic ex-Nazi concentration camp doctor. “Is it safe?”

This was a perfect #readathon book- fast-paced, entertaining, quippy, surprising. Probably one of the best thrillers I've ever read.

Not book related but for you runners out there, the winner of the Honolulu Marathon just came in Lawrence Cherono of Kenya 🇰🇪 came in (unofficially/officially) at 2:08:26. He broke the record last year by more than a minute & broke his record this year by more than a minute. Pretty cool. The women's winner will be in in a few minutes. The turn around point is close to my house but it's raining out here & I'm watching from the comfort of home. 🎉

Mehso-so

So, I had no idea what this book was about going in, and I have never seen the movie. I'm giving it a so-so because the first half was incredibly slow, but the second half mostly redeemed it. IS IT SAFE?!?!

mcipher The movie is why my dad is afraid of the dentist, but I have never seen it or read the book! I'm fine with dentists and so maybe that's for the best. 😝 7y
bookwrm526 @mcipher hahaha! I don't blame him at all. I recorded the movie the other night and plan to watch it soon. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I saw the movie first so I knew what I was getting into. It is actually and incredibly loyal adaptation. 7y
IamIamIam I'm about a quarter in and literally said the same thing to my husband last night! I know I've talked about the film but I'm not sure if I've seen it. I guess I'll keep plugging away! 😁 5y

#junebookbugs #teeth
A long while ago i had a hardback copy of this book and it's probably in a box in the cellar but there is a scene in it which has me arching my back, hence the image from an equally good film. Although I posted in another thread Goldman's book about screenwriting in which he discussed the contrasting acting styles of Hoffman and Olivier. Anyway I'm now worrying about the fatheroday toffee im chewing 😁

TobeyTheScavengerMonk YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!! I love this book and movie so much! "Is it safe? Is it safe?" 7y
