Even when the story isn't the best, this leans in on romantic tropes more than I care for, Cherryh's world building is top rate. Merovingen comes alive, from its dirty dangerous canals to the towers where the rich and powerful live. I don't usually read the Appendix, but I recommend it here, it's almost Tolkiensque in describing the religions, culture, music, politics and history of Merovin. 4 💥💥💥💥
