To me, this story started out slowly, but then picked up the pace and was much more readable. It's a story of a 14 year old girl addicted to meth in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and her road to happiness.

Heartbreaking, well done. Laurel lost her mom and grandmom in Hurricane Katrina. At 15, she tried meth and that became her “moon”...

Powerful and moving, this one packs a lot emotion into under 200 pages. #YAL

Laurel loses her mother, grandmother and hometown to Hurricane Katrina. Trying to find work, her father moves her and her little brother to Iowa. She finds a best friend, becomes a cheerleader and starts dating the co-captain on the basketball team. Then she is introduced to meth and everything changes. This is my first book by Woodson and I want more. In less than 200 pages, I was invested in most of the characters. Yeah, I cried. #Booked2019

I just read this book in one sitting after I said I was going to bed early 🤦🏻‍♀️. This was my book club‘s pick this month and I was not disappointed. I loved the writing and the message. It was so poetic and it really reminded me a lot of Francesca Lia Block‘s style. It‘s such a dark story, but it really makes a point of showing a glimmer of hope. I couldn‘t put it down and I will be reading all of this author‘s work now!

Butterfinger One of my favorite authors 6y
