In this graphic novel, we follow Helen, 11, on her quest to discover what happened to the "rare bird" who took his own life. I really enjoyed this atmospheric, slow-paced, philosophical book.

In terms of the illustrations, this graphic novella is very much in the minimalist style, as other reviewers have noted. But there‘s actually quite a world for both the reader and the heroine to explore—without any omniscient narrative, readers identify with Helen in her quest to find out about the mysterious Emrys, and are swept along in this unsettling detective story which is deeply tragic and hopeful still, sometimes within the same panel.

Pickpick

This was a random pick from the library - I knew it was set in Wales and flipping through I loved the minimalist charcoal drawings... now having read it I'm very glad I picked it up. A young girl unravels a mystery about her recently deceased neighbor with the help of the animals all while settling into her new home. It's a very subdued story and there is actually very little text, so one is left to rely on the art and subtext. Well done.

BookishBelle I'm a little jealous of your pictures with your cat sitting peacefully near your books. My cat is just a black blur in any picture I try to manufacture. It has to happen naturally and I have to be quick and sneaky. 8y
Eyelit @AmyCFoster it helps that I tend to get the pics as they are just waking up from a nap or about to fall asleep 😄 but I do think I've been generally lucky lately getting good pics of them with books! 8y

It's interesting, and I'm not sure if it's my mood or the rainy day... but this is the second graphic novel I've read today that is a bit melancholic in nature...
