Pickpick

Just finished this last night. I loved Allison Pataki's The Accidental Empress and Sisi... And this also did not disappoint. It's a gripping, immersive look into the life of Peggy Shippen Arnold through the eyes of her maid Clara. Each time I picked this up, I was transported to Revolution era Philadelphia with its vivid depiction of redcoats, rebels, and high society.

My evening is booked. I'm so excited to crack open this novel about ancient Rome, its cuisine, and its epicure, Apicius.😍 I know the Romans liked their honeyed wine. I'd like to think they'd approve of my 🍯 whiskey, too.

Anyone heard about or read this book yet? I'm so intrigued by it that I'm taking a break from my go-to historical fiction pile.

From Goodreads:
"The Handmaid's Tale meets The Hunger Games in this brilliantly imagined debut.
Born into the lowest class of her society, Flora 717 is a sanitation bee, only fit to clean her orchard hive. Living to accept, obey and serve, she is prepared to sacrifice everything for her beloved holy mother, the Queen."

Had yesterday off work, so I spent the whole morning and afternoon finishing Sisi. What a beautiful story! The Accidental Empress was more of a page turner for me (couldn't put it down!), and I must confess I liked it better. I read Sisi at a slower pace, but adored the story and especially the ending.

On to the next book! I devoured The Winter Palace, so I'm looking forward to returning to Russia for Catherine the Great's next chapters. This is where it's going to get good! Wide Sargasso Sea | Jean Rhys

Jane Eyre is one of my favorite stories, but the mystery of the lady in the attic always bothered me. I wanted to know more about her tragic life. Well, apparently this exists. Jean Rhys wondered the same thing, so she wrote Antoinette's (Bertha's) story. So excited to read Wide Sargasso Sea.
