⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book was such a well-crafted whirlwind. I gifted this to a good friend last weekend and I can't wait to hear how she feels about it. 😊

⭐⭐⭐⭐

I read Asymmetry at completely the wrong time, while I was not really in a good place to read. It took me ages to finish the story because of that. Still, I loved it - and admired it.

There were so many perfect sentences, so many ideas to think about, this book has such originality.. I am grateful to the bookseller who convinced me to buy it.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

I love Robin, Strike, and J.K. Rowling's writing too much to rate this unfavourably, but I did feel like she left us hanging on this one in terms of the friendship between Robin and Strike. The case they had to solve I found stronger and easier to follow than the cases in the previous two installments, so that was good. All in all, I enjoyed the reading experience, delving in and finishing this all in a day and a half.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 to this entire series.

I had never before read science fiction, but the characters and themes in these three books have just blown me away. What a nuanced, intelligent, thoughtful series. I so hope there is going to be a part four..

I'm over halfway in Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb and I really like it. I'm slightly disappointed, but that's because of my sky-high expectations, the somber turns that the plot keeps taking, and the vague serpent talk. Everything else is all good and I can't wait to read the rest.

Mitch Oh that trilogy just gets better and better and better! Enjoy 6y
Roos @Mitch Oh thank you! I can't wait, really. I think it's also the fact that English isn't my first language that's bothering me just a tiny little bit. All of the ship stuff I wouldn't understand in Dutch, let alone in English! But I am loving the characters so much! 6y
Mitch @Roos they‘re so great aren‘t they. I love the women across the age ranges. 6y

It took me some time to get stuck into this one. The magical realism seemed too forced in the beginning of the story and I can't say I cared much for the characters. The author seemed overly present in the story. After a while, though, after the context had been laid out, the multi-generational tale with Ava at the center started up and I adored that. The bakery made this such a scrumptious autumnal read.

The second-hand section of my bookshop is full of my old books! Loved the White Tiger, just not going to read it again. 🙈

This book is crazy empowering. It is fierce and unapologetic, which is what all women (all people!) should be. Will be recommending this to anyone who will listen and gifting it to anyone who won't.

The Vampire Lestat | Anne Rice
post image

Just received this little one through an anonymous book exchange!! So exciting. Any thoughts on either the book or the author? Let me know if this novel is one I should delve into before I travel to New Zealand in two months' time. 🤔

brilliantglow Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles are definitely worth reading. They're well written and really make you consider the horror of actually being a vampire. Where as a lot of other vampire stories are romanticized. 8y
Fortifiedbybooks While you don't have to read Interview with the Vampire to understand what's going on in The Vampire Lestat, the first book is better, IMO. 8y
MrBook 😊👍🏻 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Like other said, this is a book far along in a lengthy series. Rice is masterful though! 8y

My boyfriend is pictured here reading Cline's the Girls during our Corfu getaway. I read it after him and enjoyed the ride, too! We loved the authenticity and newness of Evie's psychological development and how atmospheric the language was. And now I promise I will never post a book review in first-person plural again! 😂

Brooklyn | Colm Toibin

This story! I can't get enough of Toibin and am dying to get to Nora Webster. It was very well received here in the Netherlands. I also watched the film adaptation of Brooklyn and am rewatching it in my local cinema with my boyfriend as part of a film adaptation lecture. I guess that says enough! 💞

MrBook Nice review 😊👍🏻. 8y
Roos @MrBook Thanks! 8y
Bookberry I love Brooklyn. Read in two days. It was wonderful. Saw the movie afterwards. I liked it as kind of a summary of the book. Will definitely read the book again and watch the movie again, too. I sure want to read more of Colm Tóibín. This was my first one. 8y

Which book on the Man Booker shortlist are you excited about? After reading the first pages of Szalay and Beatty, I want to read both! Oops. And I haven't even checked out the others.

Krysta All of them! I don't know where to start! 8y
MrBook I haven't read any of them yet *sighs*. 8y
Roos @Krysta @MrBook All That Man Is and the Sellout both looked veeeery promising. Readable, too! 8y
Krysta Sellout caught my eye back when the long list was released 8y

Norwegian Wood | Haruki Murakami

Ah, Norwegian Wood.. It had been recommended often and when a colleague from the bookshop came by to lend me her copy I no longer had any excuse not to. I loved the easy, straight-forward style and the quiet but sincere emotion of it. I will definitely be reading more Murakami, although I am prepared to be lightly freaked by talking cats and the like.

tea_stankovic I love Norwegian Wood, but my favorite by Murakami is After Dark 😊 @Peculiaritea 8y
MrBook #NiceStack and review 😊👍🏻. 8y
Roos @tea.stankovic That's such a coincidence! After Dark is actually the only Murakami I physically own! This is probably a sign. 8y

Roos @MrBook Gracias! It feels weird to see these little blurbs as actual reviews because I'm not often satisfied with my phrasing, but I'm going to embrace it and improve along the way! 8y
MrBook Lol, I hear ya. A lot of Litsyans provide links to their blogs for enhanced reviews. 8y
Bookberry I liked reading Norwegian Wood. A nice and quiet book. My first Murakami. 8y

Pulphead: Essays | John Jeremiah Sullivan

Pulphead is about a range of topics American. Some of Sullivan's essays I loved, not least for his tone of voice, but sadly there were also many that went over my head. I am not quite versed enough in American (social, political, and economic) history.

The contrast between the familiar and the exceptional was everywhere around me. [...] An electric forklift truck was being used to unload goods from an ancient wooden cart with wooden wheels. The impression was of a plodding indefatigable and distant past that had crashed intact through barriers of time into its own future. I liked it.

MrBook Great pic! Welcome to @Litsy ! We hope you enjoy your stay, I think you'll like it here 😎👍🏻. 8y
