There's this part of the book where Jeanette is turning ten years old. She's not expecting much of a birthday present when her dad promises to get her anything she wants.

"'Do you think you could maybe stop drinking?'
Dad said nothing....'You must be awfully ashamed of your old man,' he said....
'If you don't mind, honey, I think I'd like to sit here by myself for a while.'"

I just find this to be so touching. He truly want to be a good father.

"When Dad went crazy, we all had our own ways of shutting down and closing off, and that was what we did that night."
