Just finished. Still processing this one, savoring the metallic aftertaste and digesting the gritty substance of it. I can‘t decide what to make of it, just yet, but I have a sad and beautiful and terrible ache in my chest. Darnielle is a writer with subtle power for sure. Anyone else read this one? #amreading #universalharvester #johndarnielle
I had never read this before, but I‘m so glad I did. It was a quick, beautiful read with startling, gorgeous prose. SO many good lines & stunning paragraphs. Beautiful execution of third person omniscient narrator, also. And, for me? There‘s just nothing like a good witch story.
Call him Voldemort, Harry. Always use the proper name for things. Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself.
Yesterday‘s library haul. Started with John Darnielle‘s UNIVERSAL HARVESTER & so far, so good.
Wolfing this down; halfway through. Woke up last night to the toilet running & was convinced a demon had flushed it, if that tells you anything.
Breathtaking. Heartbreaking. Gorgeous prose. Please read.
Beginnings are hidden in the shadows of time, are gradual, are two half glances in a dark bar. Tiny things that no one even notices, but that hold everything.
We think of ourselves as Knights of the Holy Contact. This is another lie. We are seeking only Man. We have no need for other worlds. We need mirrors. We don't know what to do with other worlds. A single world, our own, suffices us; but we can't accept it for what it is.
