Bird Box: A Novel | Josh Malerman

Pickpick

I ended up binging this book in a matter of hours because it was too intense to out down. Of course, I watched the Netflix movie like everyone else, and I have to say, the book makes certain things a little clearer and is even more tense. If you liked the movie, definitely check it out, and then be glad they left out the dogs!

Pickpick

In comparison to his first novel Pop Kids, this one is practically a masterpiece. It's more focused and engaging with a story that's not entirely hinged on some of the weirdest sex scenes. It's still written by someone better known for writing dramatic lyrics and is a bit of a vanity project, but is actually one I had a good time reading. And at 250ish pages, it won't take much of your time at all.

Update: I finished this monster yesterday and... My weak core and bad back are thrilled not to be hauling it around in my bag anymore.

As for the book itself? I was intrigued by some of the narrative threads but don't feel fulfilled at all by most of them. It felt like there were several books happening at once and McIntosh just didn't bother finishing any one of them.

Or I just didn't get it. What do you think?

About a third of the way through this monster, still trying to work out how all the threads come together but I'm a sucker for anything that ventures outside the confines of traditional narrative sructure!
