Magpie Murders | Anthony Horowitz
Pickpick

When I first started this book I knew I recognized the name of Anthony Horowitz, but couldn't remember where from. Pleasantly surprised to learn he wrote one of my favorite series as a kid, Alex Rider. It only makes sense that I loved this book as much as I did. I gasped out loud, I made guesses, and I had no idea where any of it was actually headed.

I bought his book yesterday while picking up my order at my local bookstore. I started after dinner last night and only stopped to sleep. I loved it! Mackintosh isnt breaking new ground in terms of subject matter, but it's her unique voice that makes this book a worthwhile read!

I found myself forgetting this book was written in 1985; it seems to be the perfect book for our current social climate. I think that speaks to the timelessness of Atwood's thesis.

I liked the writing style. Offred recounts her story with a forced apathy, at once standing with us and watching herself go through her traumas. Some might be put off by it, but I wasn't.

TheEllieMo It is timeless, I agree - but also slightly worrying that little seems to have changed in 34 years! 5y

I don't have too much experience with grim/dark fantasy, if that's what you'd call this. As such, I had some doubts about whether or not I wanted to finish this book. I did, and am glad for it.

Many of my reading sessions with this book went much longer than they were supposed to. The world and the characters were very engaging, and Sapkowski has a unique voice in a genre where that can be rare.

BehindthePages I enjoyed this one! I had some doubts too, but I think the translation affected it. If you want to explore dark fantasy, I highly recommend the Broken Empire Trilogy by Mark Lawrence. 5y

I picked it up and didn't put it down until I was done with it. Expertly crafted, powerfully gripping, and of the utmost importance. Give it a read.

There were times where I rolled my eyes and there were times where I couldn't stop reading. All of the characters could have done with a little more fleshing out, and the story was a bit generic in its turns and twists. I'd try the second book in the series, but if it's more of the same, I'd probably abandon it.

Absolutely loved it. Woodsy folklore, animals wearing clothes, evil witches, this book has it all. Surprising amount of world building for a middle grade read. I can't wait to get into the rest of the series.
