Brink Road: Poems | A. R. Ammons

... but what are we here for, to figure / out every little thing or to clear / a place off for what we have to say?

I'm really struck, here at the end of chapter ten, the subtle suggestion that the Christian god is in part responsible for the wickedness of man by casting Adam out of the garden of Eden, for showing disdain rather than love. For a book published at the end of the 18th century, it's really a bold and astonishing suggestion.

"Remember that I am thy creature; I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel, whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed. Everywhere I see bliss, from which I alone am irrevocably excluded. I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend. Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous."
