The third installment in the #CyrusHavenSeries is another exciting one that I listened to at every opportunity! Evie, now 21, lives with Cyrus. His older brother, hospitalized for decades, is granted release to return home, making Evie uneasy. Meanwhile she accidentally ties Cyrus more personally in the case of a missing woman in a new mystery they wind up working together to solve. The plot may be a little more predictable but still enthralling!

A bit delayed— this sad story of sisters, addiction, murder & grief was my actual last read of March. This #BOTM has been on my shelves for a while & I‘m glad my husband “made” me read it (he wanted to watch the show, but I couldn‘t without reading this first!). The characters, flaws & all, really come to life against the bleak Kensington setting. Though a hefty novel, I read it quickly, appreciating the plot‘s turns! Curious to watch the show!

Both Wakefield twins narrate this one as each club plans the party of the year to prove which club is better. The Unicorns are upset when one of the day care kids says the Angels are the best club; the Angels feel down about Mandy‘s defection back to the Unicorns. The original backyard bbqs fall away to a coincidentally planned fundraiser party for the center. The Unicorns throw a casino theme inside while the Angels have a carnival theme outside!

This #AardvarkBookClub pick has been waiting on my shelves & I had so much fun reading it! I giggled, I even teared up! Gretchen grew up a conwoman & for the last few years she‘s worked as a spirit medium in DC. Her best wealthy client sends her to a MD goat farm to perform an exorcism so that it can be sold… & Gretchen meets not only a grumpy farmer, but her first actual ghost who she can communicate with! I really had fun reading this! So cute!

Ugh… if you are remotely squeamish about bugs, skip this spooky story! Taking place mainly over two days, Margaret follows clues directed from a mysteriously delivered iPhone to try and find the fate of her missing best friend. There‘s also the perspective of someone else tracking down Charity— an uber rich tycoon with his own dark obsessions. Gory & downright icky at times, this quick read is hard to put down but not my favorite of Cutter‘s.

The second book in the #CyrusHavenSeries picks up not long after the first— Cyrus hasn‘t stopped looking into Evie‘s past & when a dead detective‘s notes tie to Evie, they are both thrust into fresh dangers. Told in dual perspectives, this one answers many of the questions raised in the first one about Evie‘s tragic childhood. A gripping & well-performed listen, this ends satisfyingly & makes me curious to see where the rest of the series will go!

This month‘s #bookclub pick was undoubtedly the one the least amount of people finished (2/3s did not), but I am not sure why. I thought it was a quick read. Sold into slavery at six years old, Little Flower‘s life certainly goes from one tragedy to the next for most of the book. Linjing, her owner, does grow as a character but not before the reader wants her to receive some of the suffering her jealousy causes. Well-researched & fast paced!

I think this may be Winstead‘s best book yet! I couldn‘t put it down! Narrator Janeway Sharp finds herself falling down a true crime rabbit hole as a distraction from the grief of suddenly losing her father. With a multimedia feel, & inspired by familiar cases with fresh twists, this riveting read is well-plotted & raises questions on amateur sleuthing, mob mentality & the aftermath of loss. The Keenan family has lived in the wooded Dahlmouth, VA for 3 years, but their relocation for Rachel‘s opportunity to become chief of police seemed worth the price small town living. More religious, the town hates the blogs & “city writing” of Rachel‘s husband, a pariah in his own family after the fatal car accident he caused that stole the life of their son. Witha reimagining of the fate of the lost Roanoke colony, this spooky tale moves fast.

I enjoyed my #BOTM pick for this month! Fast-paced & entertaining, I read this in practically one sitting! Stava nicely mounts the tension in her debut where Sloane‘s lies add to the unsettling feeling as she inserts herself in the lives of Violet, Jay & Harper. My first experience with the author, this came out over two decades ago & it would be interesting to see if life on Karabati, a remote equatorial island has changed much. Finally a Wakefield narrator! New Unicorn member Liz narrates the story of the club getting a chance to compete on the local channel‘s game show Best Friends. They also still need to raise $300 for a new toupee for the principal! Liz organizes their letter to participate & flyers to take on odd jobs. The rivalry gets intense when the new 8th grade club, Eight Times Eight is announced as their opponents. Jessica raises the stakes to win with a bet!

TorieStorieS Unfortunately this one has some issues with both series continuity (Mary Wallace‘s past no longer includes the kidnapping drama or the return of her birth mother) and continuity within itself where Lila is identified as a Leo (when everyone knows she is actually an Aries!) but by the end is called a Taurus! MY BIG FAT FAKE MARRIAGE is a spin-off of this, also very inspired by TED LASSO, romantic comedy. Instead of Ted inspiring the romantic lead, the character of Roy Kent gets a new name (but not really a new anything else) here. Again, if you like the show, the characters and dialogue really (gruffly) scream out loud. It‘s more plausible than its newly released spin off, but the character development again feels like watching a superfan play.

I literally said, “Eewwww!” But maybe I prefer closed door though fake dating is a fun trope.

See All 7 Comments
TorieStorieS @ShelleyBooksie It‘s one brutal scene with death to 4 animals total. It‘s in the beginning & isn‘t really revisited in detail (though it‘s mentioned again once). While this type of scene usually is enough to really detract from the book for me, it‘s like a bloody bit of foreshadowing for the rest of the emotional ride the book gives. It‘s not a gratuitous scene, but with the farm setting, the mortality of animals is present but not pervasive. 4w
TorieStorieS @ShelleyBooksie It‘s a predator/prey situation that involves lethality for all animals involved. It‘s horrible, but didn‘t make me cry. If that helps at all$ 4w

This SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE-inspired rom-com makes for a cute (though there a few steamy scenes!) listen. Single mother Lucie is shocked when her pre-teen daughter calls a local radio station‘s love-line with host Aiden Valentine for dates on her mother‘s behalf. Soon Lucie‘s on the air with her new co-host but there are more sparks between them than the callers! Their hurdles to romance fall a bit flat, but they make an easy-to-root-for pair!

Julsmarshall I loved this! 1mo
TorieStorieS @Julsmarshall Oh I‘m glad! I had fun listening to it! 1mo

What a gripping #BOTM for this month! Though not my favorite of McAllister‘s, this still makes for a fun read! I may have guessed the main twist early on, but there are still some surprises! The book opens with introverted, book loving Cam and her first day back to work as a literary agent when she‘s called away by the police. Hostage negotiator Niall provides the other perspective here with the storyline spanning years with secrets & betrayals!

It‘s nearly the end of the school year & Janet Howell‘s making everyone miserable as she prepares for a year-end speech & a fabulous party. She‘s not sparing a single expense… but also not a single feeling! After blowing up at Lois Waller (Lois once again spills her spaghetti in the lunchroom), Elizabeth encourages her to throw a rival party the same night as Janet‘s! With more reminders of books in the past, this one is almost bittersweet!

JenlovesJT47 Lol poor Lois! 😆 2w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 It was nice to see her play a large role again here at the end! 2w
JenlovesJT47 I feel so bad for her. Francine was very fat phobic and I grew up thinking that was normal (not just because of her). I read them now and am appalled 😳 2w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I know exactly what you mean! There are parts that certainly haven‘t aged well in these books! 2w

I absolutely loved this!! My book club read THE SNOW CHILD ages ago, but I didn‘t expect to stay up so late to finish this in practically one sitting! I‘m so glad this was a #BOTM pick for the month! I found this emotional, tragic fairytale set mostly in Alaska to be a completely riveting read! I loved the characters, the setting & the aura of magic surrounding it all! Some may find this to be Beauty & The Beast-ish, but it‘s selkie-ish to me!

Aims42 Is that a mold-a-rama wax bear?? I have a few animals from Brookfield Zoo outside of Chicago 😁 (edited) 1mo

TorieStorieS @Aims42 I would totally wear a perfume of that scent!! I guess melted crayons are almost there but I think there‘s some sort of magic in the machine itself!! 🤣 1mo
Aims42 @TorieStorieS There is definitely some magic in the machine itself, no doubt in my mind 🥰 Seeing your pic brought back so many happy memories, thank you! 💛🧡🩷 1mo
