🌊Reading on O'ahu! 🌴

Anyone else remember these card decks circa early 2000s with "52 Great ... " picks? I'm sure they had more than just books, but my sister gifted this set to me. Recently came across them while "Kondo-ing" and was inspired to add a few titles, including these, to my Overdrive Holds. Yay for modern literature classics! ??????

Book swap success at the #HBMF2018 ! Traded in five read titles (finished thanks to the #theunreadshelfproject2018 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼) and added five more to the TBR. I'm hoping to finish 2 or 3 of these used books by July and pass on to family and friends when we meet for our Mainland adventure.

Weekend goals! Author Adam Johnson is appearing at the 2018 Honolulu Book & Music Festival on Sunday. I'm listening to the audiobook in the car and reading a few pages of the library book at night. Both "reading" methods are great for this title, it's hard to recommend one over the other.

Loving this well-paced library pickup on a not-so-lazy Sunday morning. Not doing well working down my weekend to-do list, but no regrets. I feel like I should throw in some old-time Hollywood descriptors. Stunning! Fabulous!

Really happy to see that my son's 5th grade class is reading this. Two years ago my oldest son read My Brother Sam is Dead in the same grade. This year the 5th graders read that again, but now the students are following that book with a completely different perspective of early America.

Always like to see comments and notes scribbled in used books, but rarely, if ever, do I encounter dirty words!

Making progress on the #theunreadshelfproject2018 with the help of Overdrive and audiobooks. Always like nonfiction when read by the author and this one is very well done! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I started listening to the audiobook and felt I was missing something. I opened the sample ebook in Overdrive to read the first few chapters. Maybe it was just the French names throwing me off? Sort of. Turns out I was missing something...and I also wasn't. The narrator does a great job handling this writing (seriously!). But seeing this in print helped a ton, too.

So hard to make progress on #theunreadshelfproject2018 when the new releases at the library are so tempting! I am working my way through a long audiobook left unfinished in 2017. Days in yet only 43% through. Remembering why it didn't get finished the first time around. 🤷‍♀️

A #theunreadshelfproject2018 challenge fail but a win at the library? Made it 21 days into the New Year before finding myself at the library today. Picked up 3 new titles and Mayflower for 25 cents at the library sale. My son is studying the Pilgrims and the New World this month at school. Good or bad idea to read this at the same time?

More challenges for 2018! Part 2 of #theunreadshelfproject2018 - finish more Steinbeck. These were purchased at the National Steinbeck Center gift shop during a quick stopover in 2016. A few titles were for re-reading and some are works I've loved for the title alone (like "The Winter of Our Discontent") but never read.

#theunreadshelfproject2018 was made for me! The first finishes of the new year will be non-finishes of years past. First up? Longest on the GoodReads shelf. I didn't finish this because I checked out the Audiobook (read fabulously by Jeremy Irons-check it out if this is on your TBR) and I had to return unfinished. Later found this copy at a sale. Here we go 2018!

Another questionable blurb seen here. Won't call out which parts, but was this an oversight? Intentionally misleading? I will be critical of the use of "hilarious." Well-written and funny in parts in a very dark humor sense, but torture and violent murder after murder ... not hilarious.

Not sure how to feel when re-reading the inside jacket makes you wonder what you missed in the book you just finished. Confused? Annoyed? Did the writer of the blurb read a different draft? Or the whole book at all?

Love the writing shown here but ultimately couldn't get into the pages and pages of dialog and conversations. For me, the second DNF of NPR's Top 10 of 2016.

Good day at the Book Sale! Thank you Friends of the Library of Hawaii for another great event at McKinley in July. (Background stack shows my July-August loans. Happy to report half of that stack read!)

This first page had me hooked. Thank you NPR for a story earlier this summer on Octavia Butler that pushed Kindred to the top of my TBR.
