The Merchant's Daughter | Melanie Dickerson
Pickpick

I really enjoyed this book! The retelling was different enough from the original fairy tale to make it an interesting read, and following along with the main character as she pursued her goals and developed as an individual, a woman, and a Christian was fun. If you're looking for a lighthearted read and enjoy occasional cheesy lines of old English romance, pick this one up.

I really enjoyed this read. What started off as a funny, ridiculous caricature of human life turned into a deep examination of what real relationships are made of. I'm excited to read the sequel!

The Screwtape Letters | Clive Staples Lewis
Pickpick

This book was a beautiful, harsh reminder of what "Not God" really looks like. This came along at a wonderful time for my spiritual growth, and I have SO MANY challenging ideas to think about after reading it. I love Lewis's style, too - his clever wit combined with the truth of the human condition is just as likely to make me wince at my own actions as it is to make me laugh at how silly we can be.

Mehso-so

I usually love fairy tale retellings, but this one didn't jive with me. I liked the alternative way of looking at Sleeping Beauty, with fairies, vengeful twins, and accidental love. However, the characters all seemed to stumble through the story in a way that made it hard to engage, with little character development. Sadly, the ending was incredibly abrupt and came off as a cop-out, with lots of plot ripe for the taking that was left unfinished.

Shley9225 There is a second book... if that may help with the unresolved plot. 6y
Saiden @Shley9225 Ah! I will have to check that out. I want to find out what happens next! That may improve my overall impression of the books. Thank you for telling me. 6y
Shley9225 @Saiden glad to help ;D 6y

Siege and Storm | Leigh Bardugo
Pickpick

Y'all, 10/10 would recommend. I like this second book even more than I liked the first, and that's rare for me. Bardugo is a master of witty banter, and I love how human her characters are - she doesn't do black and white people. Everyone has light and dark mixing inside of them like a delicious, literary oreo cheesecake.

Shley9225 “a delicious, literary oreo cheesecake” may be the best description I‘ve ever seen for a book 6y
Saiden Hahaha thanks! I feel it's accurate 6y

Wild Magic | Tamora Pierce
Pickpick

This is one of my favorite Pierce books. The main character is fiesty and passionate, but also has a lot to learn about who she is and what she can do. Also, this form of magic - Wild Magic - is one of my favorite renderings of what a world with magic could be like.

If you don't mind moderate cursing (not Holly Black levels, but more than your average YA novel) and you've ever had anything to do with 1980's culture, I highly recommend this book. Ready Player One is an interesting look into how technology could transform our world - our interactions with each other, our career goals, our educational system, and even our understanding of ourselves.

Shley9225 Wait... does Holly Black swear a lot? I‘m in the middle of The Cruel Prince and didn‘t even notice... 6y
Saiden I think she does in some books, but not others. I was mostly referring to her book Tithe, which is where it stood out to me. I was also much younger when I read it, so it may have just stood out to me more then! 6y

Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite authors, and rereading this childhood favorite left me smiling and nostalgic. If you're looking for an easy and adventuresome read, I highly recommend taking part in the Lioness Quartet.

Shadow and Bone | Leigh Bardugo

Bardugo is fast-becoming one of my favorite authors. Shadow and Bone is a whirlwind of stylized magic, dark villains that you desperately want to be redeemed, relatable characters, and the perfect touch of romance. Highly recommend!
