Really enjoyed the seamless and flowing prose. I feel that this book could have gone on for a lot longer, as Marianne's masochism wasn't fully explored. Only disappointingly unrealistic portrayal was that of the counsellor and her questions...

I really wanted to enjoy this series. But I often felt disappointed by how seemingly shallow a lot of the character interactions were
A lot of potential to the breadth of this story... But the dialogues were a bit clunky
I liked the breadth and potential for this novel, but the dialogues and psychology behind some of the characters were just often not that good
Just the right amount of detail to make this book readable and flow. Very funny in lots of part.
I really enjoyed the poetry of this book. It felt refreshing and tangible. A great retelling of the Oedipus tragedy
Really enjoyable easy read. Although the sequence of the book is loosely chronological, the chapters often go back in forth in time when discussing themes. I was hoping for there to be more about the decline and last days of the Empire.
I loved this book. 7 chapters written from the perspective of different characters starting from the wedding of Penelope to Odyssey, when the Trojans visited Sparta and left with Helen, to the sacking of Troy. Although each chapter was written by different authors, it all seemed to flow really well.
Mary Renault brings Theseus alive in her retelling of his story. As opposed to keeping with the myth though, she deviates slightly, eg the Minotaur is not a beast, but simply the son of Minos. The 7 boys and girls from Athens weren't an offering to the Minotaur, but forced to take part in the bull dances, etc...
Overall a good book, but with a lot of references to terms which didn't exist in Ancient Greece such as 'gentleman'...
I wanted to read a primary source on Ancient Greek mythology, to get an understanding of how the Greek gods came into being. Theogony was much shorter than I expected (32 pages). Although it does tell of how Zeus overcame the Titans, there wasnt much detail. And a lot of the detail seems to be a genealogy of lesser deities.
