A Man Called Ove: A Novel | Fredrik Backman
Panpan

There were a few nice moments but mostly the characters were much too one dimensional & predictable. I didn't hate this book but I was just expecting a lot more. In the end, wouldn't recommend it.

Bakingbookworm That's too bad this didn't resonate with you. I enjoyed listening to the E-audiobook. Ove was a curmudgeon with a heart of gold. :). I haven't been as fond of Backman's other books unfortunately. Hopefully you like your next book more! 8y
PennyNotSoDreadful The audiobook versions can sometimes add another dimension👍🏼! I felt bad I didn't like it. I liked Ove's story arc only 59 seems too young to be a full on my-era-has-passed curmudgeon? 😳😉 8y
Hugoreads Thank you @PennyNotSoDreadful ...I was thinking I am the only person in the world who felt this way about this book. 8y
PennyNotSoDreadful @Hugoreads oh man - me too!!! I was the lone holdout at my book club. All were waaay at the other side of the spectrum😳😉!!! Thx for the support😄👍🏼! 8y

In honor of the Game of Thrones premier. Anyone else out there a little sad not to have this in their hands yet?

Jillee27 I'm on book two. I'm really hoping it comes out as I finish book 5! 9y
Ukulelebob I'm afraid that George R.R. Martin will die before finishing. I've decided to put off reading the series until he's done writing them. I am not mentally prepared to deal with another series that has no ending. 9y
Cataluna6 I binge read the series so I could read this when it came out. Didn't quite work out like that though 😔 I'd rather he takes his time so he can write the best story possible. I may have to reread. 9y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Cataluna6 I did the same thing...about two years ago! But I'm with you, I want him to write as fast as possible without losing any of his process and quality. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ukulelebob My fear is that he'll get distracted by, influenced by, the show that has now surpassed him and it might alter what he originally intended to write. 8y
Ukulelebob @Riveted_Reader_Melissa that's a valid fear I am just glad that Tolkien lived well before Peter Jackson's time because Jackson would have ruined it. 8y
PennyNotSoDreadful I did hear that he isn't watching the TV show just for that very reason. I also read on Vanity Fair he met w/his publisher last month so maybe he's getting closer to being done🙏🏼??but who knows - we can only hope!!! 8y

Initially was excited to be reading behind the scenes with British aristocracy & the lives the accompany it from coal carrier -an actual job title circa 1940(😳)- to duke. However, was disappointed as only a very little of that in the beginning, & the secrets are, sorry to say, a bit of a snoozer.

jessicarenee I like that mug! ☕️👍 9y
Sigritona I also like the mug! 🙋🏻 8y

How is it possible for one to go to a political convention to cast a ballot for their party's nominee; then, over the course of several days, come home the actual nominee? Politics 1880 (2016?)! Just the start of what I never knew is the compelling story of James A Garfield

prowlix I do love a good presidential biography 9y
PennyNotSoDreadful Oh man - me too!! 9y
ValerieAndBooks I really liked River of Doubt so so will have to look for this one! 8y
PennyNotSoDreadful @ValerieAndBooks I loved river of doubt as well - you'll def enjoy destiny of the republic👍🏼 8y

To fill the Downton Abbey-sized hole in your heart. True account of historian who gets access to a sealed archive (of sorts) & the family secrets/mysteries she uncovers. Julian Fellowes might have gotten some of his dialogue from these letters 😉

Remembered this intensely interesting book about "fatal mishaps" in the Grand Canyon when organizing old photos & ran across this one of my girls pretending to fall over the edge?

todd That cover is an eyebrow-raiser. Convincing pose @thesaurusrex. 9y
BookNotes The Yellowstone version is just as intriguing, in a warped mind sort of way. 😳 9y
PennyNotSoDreadful Death in Yellowstone! I will have to check that out - thanks!!! 9y

Sounded v interesting but the protagonist is annoying right away -is fearless, intelligent, born leader, irresistible to men, passionate, etc, & can pinpoint the flaws of all other characters w/in seconds of meeting. Nope on this one😟

Sue Never seen a book about a fictional Dodd before! Her being irritating is probably some sort of extreme realism 😂 9y
razmanda I finished this today despite really not giving a shit if she lived or died. 9y

Easy, gossip-y, (& a bit shameless) read by Washington insider - pretty fun!

If you love anything Game of Thrones, you will love this book. The narration reads like historical fiction - interesting, exciting, never dry. Basically history if it were candy.

Sue This one is so good. I'm working my way through his Wars of the Roses at the moment, which is also great :) 9y
