The story is ambitious and contains a very good message. However, her writing falls flat sometimes. More elaboration in some areas of the story is needed and sometimes parts feel clumsily cobbled together.

I couldn't pull myself away from this one. The main character's escape from his harsh family, his unwillingness to give up and accept second best from himself. That will stay with me from this book.
This book is interesting, considering it was written in 1952. I can't imagine that it's sexual content was popular at the time. The humour in the book revs up its creep factor.
Slightly interesting, but not at all what I expected it to be. I was craving something creepy but this book was not it. It surely had its moments, though and it's a nice, quick read.
Given to me by a student, the book sat in my shelf for almost an entire year. I was apparently under the mistaken impression that it would be heart-warming crap. So wrong. Worth the read!
She can't do mystery or suspense. Too bad the book was supposed to be both.
I never thought I could get pulled into a story about "rich people problems" but I found myself pretty engaged with much of this book. Loose ends always bother me as a reader, but it is still a highly enjoyable story. A heart-warming, easy read.
Readers get to go on two adventures at once - a star-studded history with Alan on the periphery, but always influencing world events, and the crazy consequences of climbing out the window. Alan's sense of "meh" regarding what happens around him is both irritating and part of his charm.
