5/5 stars. The characters Mateo and Rufus are so deeply developed and different from anything I‘ve ever read before. This book really brings up a subject that most authors are scared to go deeply into- death. Your characters should never be invincible, which means that they will eventually die.
I absolutely loved this book. Something that a lot of people don‘t understand in this book, is that in the alternating chapters, is Darcy‘s novel about Lizzie. The chapters about Lizzie have been critiqued as amateur and underdeveloped writing. While it is technically written by a seasoned professional author (Scott Westerfeld), it is SUPPOSED to seem amateur. It‘s supposed to seem written in 30 Days, by a first-time author (Darcy Patel).
When I picked this book up, I was a bit skeptical. How on earth can you make a book interesting when it is just repeating the same things over and over again. I had read a few other Lauren Oliver books, and I enjoyed them, however I wouldn‘t say that they were my favorites. To my surprise, the book had my attention cover-to-cover. The only thing I didn‘t appreciate was that the main character seemed slightly underdeveloped. 4.5/5 stars!
I absolutely loved this book. Becky Albertalli can make the characters and worlds completely come to life. I read this book in less than 5 hours with the help of a sped-up audiobook, and the only complaint that I have, is I wish it was longer. This book has so much going for it, and I am just itching to pick up another Albertalli book in the near future!
You simply can't put it down! One thing that I appreciate with the writing: the books mature with the characters and readers. As a reader, it allows you to feel as if you are truly experiencing Bobby Pendragon as he grows from a child to adult. Bobby's adventures illustrate how important it is to respect the culture and traditions of foreign lands; peace between peoples requires mutual respect and understanding.
