Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of Surprise by David Ezra Stein (2018). The story follows Little Chicken as he discovers “the element of surprise“ in stories, but misinterprets it as “the elephant of surprise.“ He argues that every story needs an elephant. The bright pictures add to the appeal, with exaggerated reactions and elephants appearing in odd places. Aside from the humor, the book provides a fun introduction to literary themes.

I can use this book to teach about story elements. I can engage students in exploring the idea of surprise in writing.

'Don't you feel sorry for the elephant, Papa? All alone, waiting for someone to find him. Read another story and we'll find that poor elephant.'

I would use this in a classroom to help combat interruptions during story time

This would be a perfect book to use when teaching children about not interrupting others when they are talking in a fun/silly way.

Interrupting Chicken is a fun and light read for children! In this book, little red chicken just can't herself from interrupting a good bedtime story. This would be an especially good read with younger children as they are learning about listening skills.

I recently found a treasure trove of free books online (will add link in comments) and I have spent the last few days downloading every Sweet Valley book they had. I decided to read through the SV Kids series along with my SVT read-through and SV Senior Year. Yes, I am a nerd but I‘ve never read this series and I love the feeling of nostalgia I get when I read any Sweet Valley book. 🤓 I fully credit Sweet Valley books for my love of reading. ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 Thank you, Francine Pascal! Anyhoo, book one of SV Kids finds Jess and Liz in 2nd grade preparing for their 7th birthday party. Lots of familiar faces here with their later personalities on display even here in elementary school. I‘m looking forward to this read-through. 4⭐️ #SweetValley #SweetValleyKids #SVK #twins #nostalgia 👯‍♀️ 3mo
