Gordon returns to his hometown after spending 25 years in prison. He returns to a neighborhood that is riddled with crime, an elderly neighbor who is afraid of him, a teenager in desperate straits, a brother who has resented him for years, and a lonely woman who has visited him while he was in prison and hopes to have a relationship with Gordon. It‘s a lot for a guy who just wants to lay low and stay out of trouble. I couldn‘t stop reading it.
Another graphic memoir hit! This time from comic Julia Wertz who documents her life in NYC as a recovering alcoholic and self proclaimed “weirdo”. She‘s super relatable (as a fellow weirdo) with the difficult social interactions and I loved her “urban exploring” (investigating abandoned buildings) adventures! Wertz also describes the horrible dating scene and some close friendship. I really enjoyed this read..though parts were sad it was hopeful.
I really, really enjoyed and recommend this book. It‘s not just about substance addiction but how we can all be addicted to something- success, control, affection. I think anyone can get something from this book 🙏
This month‘s spiritual direction read. I‘m way more into it than I thought I would be. We all can be addicted to something- control, success, relationships- and the author makes a great case for this.
I love Jennifer L Holm but haven‘t actually read this graphic novel yet!

This graphic novel had me in tears! Such a beautiful and poignant story about a girl struggling with her big brother‘s addiction issues. Told in dual timelines, this story also weaves in the history of the DC and Marvel comics and how those characters inspired young people for the first time.
This story ebbs more than it flows. Only the protagonist is fleshed out.
Damon is being bullied as one of the few Indigenous teens at school, while his mother struggles to overcome addiction. Gritty realism with a touch of the unexplained or fantastical. The digital art by nonbinary cartoonist nicole marie burton isn‘t to my taste, but this is nevertheless a strong first volume in a graphic novel series about intergenerational trauma by Cree author Wanda John-Kehewin. #Indigenous #YA #comics #CanLit
