Mehso-so

I really like the premise behind this novel. It's unique (and quite a treat to read about the US falling from power for reasons other than climate change or zombies), but it didn't quite hit for me in the execution. (Also the narrator gave a Brooklyn accent to a character with a Boston accent, which is a small thing, but it bugs me.)

There's a dream-like quality to this book and its prose that was just breathtaking, and also quite unsettling at many points. I think Link is really good, too, at writing young people in a way that feels alive and real. Would love to talk in depth about this book with someone smarter than me.

Billypar I like a lot of books, but there are a few that stick with me so much that I have that fan impulse to want to tell the author. I'm with the Commentariat - I think this is one! 2mo

I took off the dust jacket and now it's in storage ?
Anyway
Overall a really nice long form debut from Link; I wanted to love it a little more than I actually did though, mainly because it was Too Long. I can justify length if you're doing worldbuilding in scifi or fantasy, but this wasn't a 650 page story.
Still overall positive to it, @donut_jefa called it "casually dark", which is very accurate and very typical of Link.

Another lovely book club pick for a quadrennial event with @annamatopoetry .

Kelly Link continues to be a provocative writer, and there are many things to like in this book. I enjoyed the way intimacy of different configurations is presented. I especially loved the distinctive interiority of the characters.

It is not a perfect book, and definitely not my recommended entry to her work. But all in all, a unique and fantastic novel debut.

This was incredible. I was thoroughly absorbed from start to finish.

A dark exploration of what it might be like to be brought back to life as a clone, with added twists and turns. This is not really a murder mystery, nor pure sci fi, nor lit fic, but incorporates elements from each genre to create a stunning whole.

I couldn't put it down.

Which cover do you like best? US on left, UK on right.

Amiable I think the one on the left? 3mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird I love the US cover! 3mo
Yuki_Onna I'm in favour of the UK one! 3mo

RaeLovesToRead @Amiable @TheIntrovertedDodoBird @Yuki_Onna @LiteraryinLawrence So I LOVE the US cover and dislike the UK one in terms of aesthetic, but the UK one reflects the tone of the book MUCH better! 3mo
Branwen I am SO jealous of how cool the UK cover is! 😱 2mo

I wasn‘t sure what this was all about, a guest house in the ‘town ‘ called Subdivision. Run by Clara and the Judge , our MC checks in and there is a jigsaw on the table to finish, and a crow that‘s watching. So begins a heady journey. I found it often hard to connect with, but I did develop a compassion for the MC, and I never wanted to bail, and at times I felt moved to tears. A haunting book when you really think about it.

A fresh twist on a thriller but I didn't like the ending. I did figure out what was going on so it wasn't a total shock but it felt like Williams promised one thing and delivered another. It's impossible to say more without spoilers.
