This served as a delightful unicorn chaser while I was reading Newitz‘ The Future of Another Timeline. I‘ve wanted to read Tamora Pierce for a long time—and I‘m glad I chose this as my 1983 pick for #192025. A lot of the plot felt unrealistic to me—Alanna‘s path isn‘t easy by any means, but she‘s a little too readily accepted & fits in as one of the boys far too quickly. But honestly, I didn‘t mind. I needed a lighter take on female empowerment ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …and gender dynamics, and I was happy to sink into a story where a girl in Alanna‘s place isn‘t in grave danger and the male characters aren‘t all violent, villainous misogynists! 1mo

Beautiful adaptation of a beloved YA fantasy novel. It's been years--decades--since I read the original so it was fun revisiting it in this new format.

RaeLovesToRead I've never read Tamora Pierce. Would you suggest reading the original novels first or diving into these? Looks lovely 🩷 2mo
JLaurenceCohen @RaeLovesToRead I'd probably read this and then go to the books since only this first volume is out 2mo

It has been a very long time since I read the original novel, so I can‘t speak for exactly how well this adaptation compares to it. However, it fit well with what I remembered and was a great story with fantastic illustrations. Alanna is one tough and determined girl!

thelorelei This edition is how I finally got my 9 year old son to read some Tamora Pierce; I got it from the library for MYSELF and he asked to read it first! 3mo
Daisey @thelorelei Perfect! 3mo
Kenyazero I just saw this cover on Hooppa during a list scroll. The art reminds me of a lot of Mercedes Lackey books 😆 how was this? 3mo
Daisey @Kenyazero I really enjoyed it, but I also have fond memories of reading the original books when I was younger. 3mo

A thousand times pick! An excellent graphic novel adaptation on one of the most formative books of my youth. The art is lovely and expressive; I love the story. I am eager for the next.

The Song of the Lioness was one of my all-time favorite series growing up, so I was thrilled to hear a graphic adaptation was in the works! I really enjoyed returning to this story in a very thoughtful and well-executed graphic format for middle grades, from nonbinary Afro-Puerto Rican comic book writer Vita Ayala and fantasy artist Sam Beck. Can‘t wait to share this with my godchild!

charl08 I loved the books as a teen - will have a look for the new adaptation. 4mo

Haven‘t returned to Tortall in a while, so I‘ve been reading Alanna as my before bed book. The Tortall books were just hugely impactful for me in my tweens, and I still love them. Gotta say though, I think when I replaced them a few years back I got the worst covers (on the left)- the older ones and the current ones that I‘ve seen both look better. She looks a little possessed 😅 contents are still good though.

Clare-Dragonfly I read them as my before bed books recently too! Honestly the possessed look isn‘t entirely inaccurate… 😂 1y

I recently brought a bunch of children's books from my parent's huse. I don't recall reading this series when I was a child. Also checking if it's something for my 8yo.

Now a full and (mostly) accepted knight and shaman of the Bazhir Alanna goes off seeking adventure and forgetting that adventures equal stories and stories equal fame. She travels to the roof of the world, seeks glory for her king, has dalliances with dragons, and learn yet more techniques with both fist and blade. All of which will help her with what waits for her when she finally makes it home to the castle.

Although the slowest of Alannas four books it is still one of my favourites (if we can excuse the white saviourness of it which being the very early 90s when it was published makes plenty of sense) I love the tribes and their magic and the lil teen shamans and the way Alanna both loves the desert and chafes under the expectations of the Bazhir
