Read in 2024. I listened to this one over audio that was narrated by the author. I liked Cultish a little more but found this one interesting too. Montell highlights different psychological concepts & how they connect to our current society (social media, conspiracy theories, biases). I was already familiar with a lot of these ideas from other readings.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m torn on this one. The author highlights important areas where boys lag behind girls (rates of maturation, educational attainment) and ways particularly Black boys experience discrimination and the structural issues they face in school and society. He‘s careful to make clear he does not want to improve outcomes for boys and men at the expense of women. He loses me when talking about how now that women don‘t “need” men, ⬇️

fredthemoose … men are now adrift and don‘t know their roles. I have a hard time thinking of other groups who are waiting for society to present them with their unique, valued role instead of just rolling up their sleeves, figuring out how to use their talents to make a contribution and getting to work. 🤷‍♀️ (edited) 3w

fredthemoose @willaful @quietlycuriouskate thanks. I really struggled with what to think of this. It did make me think and I want to be fair to it. The author was careful never to say it, but it seemed like implicitly a lot of the problem is that men are no long implicit the top of the hierarchy just for existing and that is hard for them and I‘m not the *most* sympathetic to that. I didn‘t enjoy this book as much as “Cultish”, but it was a good listen 😊

My annual reading theme is sociopolitical. I haven't had a chance to post my full #Roll100 list yet. However, these are the 3 for January's roll. Getting 2025 off to a fighting start.

Might be appreciated by One Direction fans?

“To sincerely adopt the psychology of tokenism, you have to sell your own community out. That‘s the dark underbelly of the thing. Instead of blaming institutions rules and social attitudes of those around you for the absence of other people like you, you blame your own community.”

#ReadAway2024

Finished yesterday, I enjoyed this exploration of our minds & cognitive biases & where they come from. It doesn‘t go especially deep into each type of bias or the science behind it but I like Montell‘s way of casually explaining concepts & putting them into relatable examples. I was just talking about the “halo effect” where we make positive assumptions about a person‘s character based on out impressions of a single trait. (You ⬇️

DebinHawaii … love Jane Austen so you you must be intelligent, witty & have a good sense of humor.) Or the “illusory truth effect” where we trust a statement as fact because we hear it multiple times. How often does that happen in our social media world? Anyway, it‘s interesting & relatable & I like the author‘s snark. I still think Cultish is my favorite of hers, but this one was excellent too. 2mo
