The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating | Elisabeth Tova Bailey

Got this one finished over the weekend. Enjoyed learning more about snails in this thoughtful account. I rate it 4 out of 5. One of my favorite aspects were the little black and white snail illustrations near the bottom of each page. The quotes from famous authors were also a nice touch. Recommended for fans of Robin Wall Kimmerer.

This was without a doubt one of the most interesting books I've read. Part of my #nonfiction reading challenge this year this is going to be one of my favorites of the year. So much detailed information! This was really a page turner.

Sorry this is late getting posted, but I received my #HHS package in the mail on Friday! I was on my way camping for the Thanksgiving weekend when I picked it up and had *zero* service the entire time. No matter where I walked and how high in the air I held my phone, no dice. Lol
I think it is from @ShelleyBooksie but I didn't see a Litsy handle on the box. I was scared to open in case it wasn't wrapped. @wanderinglynn #HHS23

The kids loved how this opened up a chance to talk about how loud things can be annoying (or scary). 2024 #WCCPBA nominee. We designed our perfect parties on the back of our coloring pages. Older students noted the literal devices such as onomatopoeia.

Nominated for the 2024 Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award, I may read this early in the year to set the standard for how loud we should party in the library. The publisher includes an activity page with discussion guide and coloring book pages! Thank them for that. https://www.kidscanpress.com/Creators/kelly-collier/

A ferret sized creature, initially visible to only one of a married couple, randomly appears in The Empty Birdhouse. A brokerage firm employee takes up the unusual hobby of snail-watching with results that have to be read in The Snail-Watcher. A woman finds new employment as a nanny in the thoroughly disquieting The Heroine. A boy finds a turtle in the kitchen, mistakenly thinking it's a present from his tyrannical mother in The Terrapin. As I👇

vivastory mentioned in my previous post, these are dark psychological stories in the vein of the short fiction of Du Maurier & Jackson, perfect for this time of year. The following is my favorite bit of literary history that I have learned this year:

I started this yesterday and have read half the stories. Very unsettling. Highsmith is great anytime of year, but this collection is esp. an excellent read for this time of year.

AlaMich I‘ve never seen a snail look so menacing! 😅 2y
vivastory @AlaMich So far there have been 2 snail related stories. The first one in particular really got under my skin. 2y
LeahBergen And Patricia Highsmith used to take her pet snails along in her handbag when she went to parties. 😆 2y

batsy @LeahBergen @AlaMich @vivastory Her snail obsession has stuck in my mind since I read this "Writer and critic Terry Castle describes how she once 'smuggled her cherished pet snails through French customs by hiding six or eight of them under each bosom' " ? https://theguardian.com/books/2021/jan/09/twisted-brilliance-patricia-highsmith-... 2y

Super cute book about how to party as an introvert. Snail slowly learns to value his own ideas of fun and yet soon discovers that even the best parties are better when you‘re not all alone.
