Found this re-telling of The Grimm' s "Six Swans" to be compelling and evocative. There was beautiful world building and Sorcha, the heroine, was strong. I found the last few chapters dragged. The fairy tale was complete so they were dedicated to completing the love story and I'm not much of a romance reader.
Still, it was good. And I think I'll take a break from fairy tales for a while.

vivastory 👋👋 Hope you are well 2d
merelybookish @vivastory Yes! Heading to London on Friday so excited about that! How are you? 2d
vivastory That *is* exciting. I hope you have a great time 💙 I'm doing well. Doing my best to carry on with all of the nonsense in the world. I'm sure you know how it is. Reading a Lethem doorstop of a novel, packed with life and wild characters (Fortress of Solitude,) and today started an interesting book of short stories by Proulx: Bad Dirt (edited) 2d
merelybookish @vivastory I voted in the Canadian election today. Hoping the nonsense candidate doesn't win here too. I started The Safekeep which is on the Women's Fiction prize shortlist. I also am trying to decide what to take on the airplane. 2d
vivastory Keeping my fingers crossed for you 🤞 I see that The Safekeep was published last year but for some reason it seems like it was a few years ago 2d

This treasure has taken the official spot as my second favorite book. Marillier is not only a master story-teller, world-builder, word-smith, and character developer; she beautifully layers so much meaning and emotion, bittersweet and heart-wrenching, like a literary lasagna. I loved the magic, the ending, the tension, the subtle romance, the themes of sibling relationships, and of trust and perseverance.

Loving this book! It's been a while since I've read a book that captivated me this much. No idea why it's taken me this long to discover this series. This first one was published back in 1999. I won't be able to sleep tonight until I finish this one. Thankful for a Goodreads Facebook post about which books are your favorites. So many great recommendations!

The downside to being on more than one book social is that sometimes you think you posted your review but totally missed one. I finished this at the beginning of the week and enjoyed it. There are some very dark events that take place but in general I found it to be a good read. Normally I find retellings to be hit or miss but I liked the atmosphere created and Sorcha was a compelling narrator.

Managed to finally finish Smoky this week but I didn't get as far as I'd like in the tagged. Work has hit crunch time so it's been 12 hour days and come in on the weekends.

#WeeklyForecast
Our big project has to be finished on Monday afternoon so hopefully I can finish something this upcoming week. Probably Daughter of the Forest.

I‘m starting the tagged for book club and found this cute post it with a pronunciation guide to the character names in it. (Also bonus #CatsOfLitsy Sierra in the background.)

I hate that I didn‘t love this more. Perhaps my expectations were too high after adoring the first in the series but I found myself bored in many places. The stakes weren‘t as high in this book and for me the plot a bit too similar to book one in some ways as well. Hopefully this sets up a stellar third novel which I will read eventually.
