Took a recent trip to Lancaster, PA for a quiet anniversary weekend that included a visit to Pocket Books Shop and Dog Star Books. Tea, McCullers, and Pavic will all be first-time reads for me. I never heard of Dictionary of the Khazars before, but apparently, it was a bestseller in 1983. Weirdly, there is a 'male' and 'female' version that are the same except for 17 lines? Could be a weird gag, but sounded interesting otherwise.

sarahbarnes I hope you like the Tokarczuk! I‘ve had a copy of Heart for ages and have never read it. 1mo
sarahbarnes I see your copy of Black Cathedral there - have you read it? I‘ve been curious about it. 1mo
Billypar @BarbaraBB Thank you! And mine is also a boy, lol. Part of me wants to look up what the line difference is, but not sure if it's a spoiler or just won't make sense out of context. 1mo
Billypar @sarahbarnes I loved Drive Your Plow but totally missed Empusium's translation coming out - I'm looking forward to it! I haven't read Black Cathedral yet - that shelf in the background is my TBR shelf. It was one I hadn't heard of before I found it in the bookstore, but seems to be squarely in my wheelhouse. 1mo

Capri runs a tour company and when one of her clients sees a woman attacked in a window and the police find nothing, Capri feels the need to investigate. This is the 2nd book in a series, and I think it is even better than the 1st one. It is a cozy mystery, with a touch of romance. Set in San Francisco, with all sorts of tidbits about the city and its history, it is not only entertaining but also educational. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. 4/5

This cozy mystery sequel is every bit as entertaining as its predecessor. I vote for a third installment! Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#a-tour-to-die-for-the-serial-killer-...

Publication is expected September 23.

Another fantastic Kate Quinn. Set in the few weeks leading up to the 1906 San Fran earthquake and proceeding days and months. It follows 4 women from different backgrounds that come together for a common cause. The historical research is fabulous.
Kate Quinn is always a pick.

During one of Capri‘s true crime San Fran tours, a participant sees a woman being attacked. But when the police arrive, nothing is amiss. Capri can‘t let it go and starts investigating, and pretty soon someone turns up dead. This is a really well constructed mystery with fun characters and interesting info about SF. I really enjoyed it!

A while since I delved into the world of
28 Barbary Lane and with Aids now having begun its impact the 'family' Michael at a loss enjoys a London flat exchange with a naval officer awol from the Royal yacht. Mary Ann and Brian, meanwhile, are unsure about trying for a baby as Mary Anne's TV career blossoms. Loved it and love this community. I'll try not to leave so long until the next.

Leftcoastzen It‘s a pretty special place . I am pondering a reread ! 6mo

Both read for #AuthorAMonth. I‘ve already posted about The Rose Code.
The Phoenix Crown didn‘t pull me in right from the start but I‘m glad I gave it a chance. Set around the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, it follows the story of four women. Last year I read another book about this event, Outrun the Moon by Stacy Lee (#SUNDAYBUDDYREAD), & loved it! I think once I stopped comparing this book to that one, it was more enjoyable.

TheBookHippie I don‘t like Kate Quinn‘s writing 🫣🤷🏻‍♀️🤫 7mo
mcctrish I struggled with The Phoenix Crown because I‘d read another book set in the same place and time and it bonded with my soul more 7mo

This is the first book I‘ve read about the crisis of being unhoused. Not just the crisis, the lived experience. The author is passionate about raising awareness and fixing this problem. This book centers on a couple of folks who became unhoused after a series of life events; this is their story. Our government has the tools to end the crisis, but it will never happen within the state of capitalist, insatiable greed that we exist in. A ⬇️

JenniferEgnor heartbreaking, educational and necessary read. ***SCOTUS gave the states the green light to criminalize the unhoused in 2024*** 7mo
