A beautifully written novel based on the politics and leaders of the newly created Pakistan. After a wonderful opening, I gradually lost interest in this satire of people and events of which I am ignorant. The writing did not make the two opposing families distinct enough for me to follow the plot. I should have read this in tandem with some kind of cliff notes.

Liz_M Darn heck. I meant to make this a review. I really must have more coffee before posting. 7y
Billypar Nice review! I love Rushdie, but his books do feel like endurance tests- midway through my brain is weary from having to unpack so many references, either to other parts of the book, or to historical events. Very dense while you're reading one, but satisfying after you've finished. 7y
arubabookwoman Rushdie is hit or miss for me. Too bad that one sounds like a miss. I will still be reading it (hopefully soonish) because it‘s on my shelf and because it‘s on the 1001 list. 7y
