Birnam Wood | Eleanor Catton

Pickpick

This book! I loved everything about it. The dark subject, the politics, the fantastic characters, the evil, the greed, the naivity. Eleanor Catton creates characters like some of the greatest classic writers did and puts them in an utterly contemporary setting. And then that ending. I lost track of time, am blown away and feel empty now that I‘ve finished it. As good as The Luminaries and my first 5⭐️ book of the year.

Centique Wow! I‘m so excited that people are loving this book. I‘m not up to it yet but I did love The Luminaries so much 💕 Great review! 2y

BarbaraBB @Centique It is a great book about New Zealand. I hope you‘ll enjoy it when you‘re up to it but I am fairly sure you will 💕 2y
TrishB Pushes up the tbr pile! Great review. 2y
batsy Great review! I know the feeling; I too felt empty right after finishing it. It's rare to read a contemporary novel so plot-heavy that's written with great care (imo). 2y
BarbaraBB @batsy It is rare indeed. I can‘t even think of one right now. 2y
BarbaraBB @TrishB Thanks. I hope you‘ll read it 2y
LeeRHarry Great review - makes me more excited to get to it 😊 2y
SamAnne Can‘t wait to start this one today. Will be my reward after chores. 2y
JenniferP Wow! I‘m glad you loved it! You were definitely more convinced by it than me, but I‘m definitely still thinking about it vividly a month after reading, which says something I think. 2y
Cinfhen Now you have me wanting to rush out and get a copy!!! Excellent review ♥️ 2y
TheLudicReader Well, that review makes me want to read it more than ever. 2y
Librarybelle Stacking! 2y
rmaclean4 Just read a great review of this in the NYT. That, plus this review, have me very interested in reading her. Do you think it will be on The Booker longlist? 2y
Itchyfeetreader You‘ve persuaded me ! Stacked 2y
squirrelbrain Great review! That ending though…! 🤯 2y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @JenniferP That ending was horrible but it seemed inevitable. It felt very convincing to me indeed. I will be thinking about it for a while I guess! 2y
Cathythoughts Great review! It‘s my favourite this year 💫 2y
BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts Mine too so far! 2y
BarbaraBB @rmaclean4 I think so. It‘s unavoidable I think. And of course the Booker people love nominating authors more than once 😉 2y
Megabooks I had already stacked it, but definitely want to read it now!! 2y
Suet624 I missed this post. I didn‘t even know about this book and now I see how many people loved it. Off to see if I can find it. (edited) 2y
Suet624 And just like that... I looked online to see if any libraries in Vermont had the book. Believe it or not, my library 2 minutes away had it. So it's now in line to be read very soon.

BarbaraBB @Suet624 I hope you‘ll love it Sue. I have been waiting for a new Catton ever since The Luminaries and I was do glad this one lived up to my high expectations! 2y
