#Nonfiction2024 is here! And it‘s a big challenge this year.

First, these are not the books you need to read…although if you haven‘t read them, I encourage you to read them.

These are banned books, and they are banned for subject matter they contain that we find objectionable for some reason.

Your challenge is to read a nonfiction book about a similar subject:
Examples below⤵️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ Harry Potter “promotes witchcraft”… maybe a nonfiction book about witches or Salem, too dark for you…maybe a book about Wiccan beliefs. Or go a different direction, a book with an orphan.
~ Reading about anything helps us understand and understanding & empathy diffuses fear.
⤵️
(edited) 11mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ So take these the way you want…a nonfiction about the core subject, or a tangential connection… not feeling like diving into the tough topics in some books… that‘s ok too….we all need a break from tough topics sometimes too. Maybe instead of diving into topics from Kafka on the Shore, an uplifting book about marine life. A book that includes the Shore, etc 11mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ Maus… you could go into the history it tries to impart, but if that‘s to heavy, maybe a great book about graphic novel writing, or a something about cats and/or mice. 11mo

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ As always, your choice! Make it fun for you! Be as creative as you want with your choices…..And tag us as you go! (We all need more suggestions) (edited) 11mo
ChaoticMissAdventures This is a fabulous idea!! I didn't read as much nonfiction as I wanted in 2023 so I need this! 11mo
youneverarrived Amazing idea! 🖤 Looking forward to joining in! 11mo
Deblovestoread Challenge accepted! Love this! ❤️💚❤️ 11mo
AnneCecilie Love this idea. I see several books I haven‘t read and want to read, so I might take this challenge literal. 11mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @AnneCecilie I‘m the same…for some I‘ll probably read the banned book and then a nonfiction book. And as few are non-fiction books, so they could count as themselves too. 😉 11mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ChaoticMissAdventures @AnnCecilie @youneverarrived and @Deblovestoread Welcome! I try to come up with a theme and board each year. You can just go for bingo or we have a few over-achievers that go for coverall. It‘s all up to what works best for you. Enjoy and have fun with your choices! 11mo
Larkken Interesting! Saving to look into later. Thank you ☺️ 11mo
Singout Thank you! This looks like a really cool structure. And it‘s year five for me! 11mo
peanutnine Wow I love this concept! Excited to take part again in 2024! I read much more nonfiction this year and I'd like to continue. Thanks for putting this together ☺️ 11mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Singout & @peanutnine You‘re welcome! This year‘s theme came to me much easier than some years….but then again, it has been a year with a lot of new book banning. 🫤 (edited) 11mo
Amiable Oh, how I love this nonfiction bingo challenge! My brain is already in overdrive trying to think of matches. Thanks! 11mo
Zuhkeeyah I love this year‘s theme! 11mo
Zuhkeeyah Should I make a Storygraph challenge for this year‘s prompts? (It was helpful for me when tracking progress on this year‘s caustic theme.) 11mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Zuhkeeyah if you want to, you definitely can! I am not on Storygraph, but anywhere you want to share it is fine with me. 11mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Maybe I should check out Storygraph 11mo
willaful Great concept! I've was just thinking today that I really should listen to the audiobook of Born a Crime, so I'll probably do that one literally. 11mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @willaful That‘s fine too, a few are nonfiction so totally works. And that‘s a really good one. 11mo
willaful @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I read it in print and enjoyed it very much, and then my daughter's high school class listened to the audiobook and it sounded like so much fun, I've been meaning to do it. (I love that for today's kids!) 11mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @willaful He reads it himself, and being a comedian… he can make even tense things funny when he tells them. 11mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @willaful Not all books are good as audiobooks, but some like that one are even better because of the Narration. 11mo
kspenmoll Wow. I am proud that I have read all but 3 on the bingo board. It‘s hard to fathom these books are banned in places. Especially Florida… 10mo
CatLass007 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Will you please add me to your tag list? Is there a tag list? 10mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CatLass007 I do not have a tag list, sorry. I just tag the #Nonfiction2024 and then anyone can search by it. 10mo
CatLass007 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Okay. Thanks. I thought that might be the case. It‘s very sad and more than a little bit scary that the number of banned books is even higher than the books on your Bingo card. 10mo
CatLass007 I‘ve had Born A Crime in my Audible library since not long after it was released. Sometimes I need a little extra incentive to listen to any given book. 10mo
CatLass007 You indicated in your post that there were examples of pairings, but I can‘t find the examples. 10mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CatLass007 if you open the comments, they were like the first couple comments under the post 10mo
CatLass007 Thank you. For some reason I wasn‘t able to find them before and it took me a minute just now. 10mo
CatLass007 I feel like I‘m being a nuisance but I‘ve never done this challenge before. Or any challenge for that matter. I understand the challenge and I‘m very excited about it. But I have no idea how to put a picture of a book I‘ve read on the Bingo card. Make sense? Do you use an app like PicCollage? If that‘s the particular app I need to use, I‘m screwed, because I don‘t find it intuitive at all. Any advice you can provide would be appreciated. (cont)⬇️ 10mo
CatLass007 I hate to be one of those people who needs handholding to perform a task that others find as easy as pie. 10mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CatLass007 You are fine! First rule, there are no bad questions! If we don‘t ask, we can‘t learn anything new. I take a screenshot of the book cover, usually on Goodreads, crop it as a photo so it‘s just the cover, then use a free app called GoDaddy Studio (formerly Over), that just lets me layer 1 picture overtop the other. I‘m sure there are many others that do the same. 10mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CatLass007 and it‘s only easy as pie once you played with it once or twice. 10mo
CatLass007 Thank you. I appreciate your information and encouragement. 10mo

I loved this background and this audiobook. I could have done with a bit less taxidermy, but just because it‘s not my thing and kinda grosses me out, but that‘s just me. However, I‘m a firm believer in laughing at your problems, that it‘s better to laugh than cry, and that truth is stranger than fiction, and this book delivered all of those in the most furiously happy way. And on a serious note, mental illness needs to be brought out into the ⤵️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ open and discussed in serious and funny ways, and I‘m so glad to see authors willing to open up about their struggles, because every story shared makes it easier for the next person to speak their truth.

What a great book, very informative about many issues facing women especially in Muslim majority countries. Some things you will find are universal, like domestic abuse and victim blaming, other things like bans from playing sports or driving cars, as well as female genital mutilation were very nuisanced and topics I was less informed about.

GingerAntics FGM is actually shockingly common here in the United States. It‘s been used since the early 20th century as a way to curb female sexual drive, as well as stop little girls from touching themselves. Dr. Kellogg was a big part of the torture of small children, believing it was best to do it without anaesthesia. FGM in America has tripled since 1990 and, sadly, my state is one of the three hot spots for it in America. 4y
Megabooks Just downloaded this and started listening. Thanks! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Megabooks You‘re welcome! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics Well that‘s horrible, and something that you would think would be talked about much more! 4y

Here‘s mine so far @Amandajoy , no bingo yet for me either.

#Nonfiction2020. #NonfictionMatters

Riveted_Reader_Melissa The tagged book is the one I‘m currently reading. 4y
Amandajoy You‘re so close to a bingo! 4y
Amandajoy How was Pushout? 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Amandajoy I wonder how far I can go and not get bingo 😂 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Amandajoy I was good, not what I expected going in, but I find myself thinking about it often in this age of Covid and more virtual schooling. 4y

Loved this one, no surprise though with Lindy West, who can make you laugh while discussing the most serious of topics. A few felt a bit dated, but most felt like they could have been written today, which is amazing when you consider how much has changed and shifted in just the last few months.

AnneFindsJoy On my TBR, love her humor! What task did you use this for? 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @AnneFindsJoy I think I‘m going to use it for #SomethingAboutSocialJustice....because she talks about a lot of current issues currently going on. 4y
AnneFindsJoy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa thanks, good to know, I still need that task too :) 4y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @AnneFindsJoy It a bit of a stretch there, but that‘s where I‘m sticking it. 😉 4y
AnneFindsJoy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa haha that‘s what I felt about Big Magic for education task.. but I love that this challenge is flexible enough that we can lean toward our interests and still make it work 😀🙌 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @AnneFindsJoy Yes, I like that about it too. I‘ve Read a few that could count in more than 1 category too.... I picked Pushout for jail reform/incarceration, but ended up counting it in education, it could have easily fit in either. 4y

Updating my #Nonfiction2020

It looks like I have a bit of a female author or gender subject theme going on. I don‘t think I can keep that going all the way through, but now I‘m wondering just how far I can go with that. 🤔

Starting with her story of online harassment from an abusive ex- that ballooned into Gamergate, her personal journey leads all the way to the UN, with stops at the Hugo‘s Rabid Puppies, and how some of those nastiest voices ended up in the current White House. She explains how the online “inquisitors” pick “witches” to burn, how the behavior can be tied into abusive relationship dynamics, how to secure your online life, and about moving on after.

gradcat This is incredible! I‘m embarrassed to say that I didn‘t know anything about this, this specific case, that is. Of course, I do know about online harassment, but I didn‘t realize how far it could go. I‘m so glad you posted this—I‘ve now stacked it & hope to get to it soon. Thanks! 📚👍♥️ 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @gradcat You are very welcome, I had heard the name Gamergate, but knew almost none of the details myself before reading this...I hope you find it informative too. 5y
gradcat Can‘t wait to get to it! 5y

What an interring article #NonfictionMatters

“Each of the books had a recently published edition customized for students in Texas and another edition customized for students in California, allowing us to see how a conservative and a liberal state are teaching history differently.”

Hopefully, this link will work and not be behind a paywall or anything🙈

wanderinglynn Interesting article. It is sad what I was taught k-12 versus what I learned later in life. 5y
