This is WAY better than “The Daughter of Doctor Moreau” was; when I actually get a chance to sit and read, it flies by. (These last two weeks have just been nonstop crazy at work, and when I get home, I do stuff for my Master‘s program and then just go to bed. 😂) But I‘m definitely along for this ride and am looking forward to seeing where it ultimately goes. #silvernitrate #silviamorenogarcia #horror #suspense #mexicanliterature

wisherwishinguponastar Did you read Mexican Gothic? I keep meaning to pick up another one of her books, but I just need to figure out which one. I really enjoyed Mexican Gothic. 1y
actualdisneyprincess @wisherwishinguponastar I REALLY enjoyed Mexican Gothic! Velvet Was the Night and Daughter of Doctor Moreau were letdowns after that one, but this is pulling the bar up again so far!! 1y
wisherwishinguponastar I can‘t wait to hear your review then! 1y
SamAnne Dr. Moreau was a so-so read for me. Loved Mexican Gothic but my favorite was Certan Dark Things. Planning to crack this one open this weekend! 1y
actualdisneyprincess @wisherwishinguponastar wrapped up a little more quickly and cleanly than I would have liked, but overall a really good spooky szn read!!!! 1y

Pickpick

There are so many themes packed into this compact little novel I know I will reread it one day. Haunting and mysterious, this is a classic of Mexican literature that lovers of magical realism will not want to miss.

Pickpick

You know when you finish a book and you want to reread it, hug it, stare at the cover in silent contemplation, and make literally everyone you know read it ALL AT THE SAME TIME? That's how I felt finishing Before by Carmen Boullosa, trans. Peter Bush (@deepvellum). Exquisite and haunting prose and voice, an absolutely beautiful, dark, compelling, and magical tale.
