RachelAmphlett Oooh. Haven‘t seen this and I love Ken Follett‘s books! 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I have the audio ready to go but I have to read the Rebecca one first. @Andrew65 (edited) 5y

Andrew65 Not heard of this one. Due to ongoing Coronavirus situation in the U.K., and new guidance from the government today I may not be able to take part in all buddy reads at the moment as will not be visiting libraries until situation improves. We have all been to,d to self isolate if any new or continuous cough or high temperature. This is for all coughs and everyone has to self isolate for 7 days from first symptoms. Spent evening putting in 👇 5y
Andrew65 Risk assessments and contacting all staff via email with updates. Now will I have enough staff to run a school as schools are staying open. The press conference from the PM is on YouTube if you are interested. Watch from about 23 minute point. @eadieb (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘m still 2 behind! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 My prediction is that schools will very shortly begin to close in UK as US had 500 cases yesterday and today over 1,000 with schools closing in New York, Maryland and other areas where virus has many infections. My library is closing for 2 weeks. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Boris Johnson was very clear on his strategy in his press conference. Said 560 ish confirmed cases but modelling said likely to be up to 10,000 infected that weren‘t confirmed. Saying if close schools too soon this will make situation worse so need to be closed at the right time otherwise people get fed up and start coming out again when situation will be at peak. May not agree with his strategy but seems to have a clear plan. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 Sure schools will close but not yet. Any children who arrive with a new or continuous cough will now be sent home and told to self isolate for 7 days from first symptom in line with government directions. @EadieB 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Patrick said the schools would have to close for 13 to 16 weeks. Our schools are only scheduled to close for 2 weeks and then they will survey the situation and decide after the 2 weeks what to do if things are not doing better. Different areas will peak at different times. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes, four months a long time. They have been very clear throughout that must be able to maintain what they start. UK approach does seem to be differing (on so called science) compared to others. I can‘t see what two weeks will do I think schools will have to be shut longer than this. Time will tell. They are saying we are four weeks behind Italy. And 2 - 3 months potentially before the peak! Quite frightening. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB So fat growth in UK does seem to have been slower than some. As yet no confirmed cases as of 9.00 this morning in our educational district and that can only be said of a very few in the U.K. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I do see the virus spreading pretty quick here in the US. I think the schools that are closing are taking two weeks and will take longer if necessary but closing schools is a hardship on the parents too. If your teachers start staying home then your school may be forced to close for awhile. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I always envisaged that if schools closed it could be up to two months at least but 13 to 16 weeks shocked me! If schools shut this could limit doctors and nurses working for child care reasons. It‘s just over three weeks to the Easter holiday so can see schools closing as we get closer until after the two weeks Easter holiday in the first instance. These gaps in learning could take years to recover from! Given messages coming out 👇 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Previously from the PM hadn‘t expected school closures would be announced today. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I think the 2 week Easter holiday should help greatly. As I do have a compromised immune system, we have canceled our UK trip. The stock market has certainly decreased our funds and another reason to cancel trip. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Mine too, but will eventually bounce back and could be a great investment opportunity, watching closely. I did wonder if you‘d have to cancel for the time being. 😔 Although U.K. is one country that Trump is still allowing flights from - at the moment. This is a good article https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/explainers-51632801 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I listened to The whole PM press conference. Trump had one last night. My husband said not restricting the UK travel doesn‘t make sense as Europeans can fly to UK and then onto US. He said Trump doesn‘t want to inhibit people going to his golf courses in the UK. He is also asking Congress to vote on paying people who stay home so it does not impact them financially. Bill hasn‘t passed yet. Too much bad political feelings still going on. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB It does seem to have a lack of joined up thinking, but also too late. The genie is out of the bottle. Italy were one of the first countries to ban flights from China. Definitely hasn‘t saved them. Now is not the time to play politics! Those Press Conferences are interesting showing how comfortable Boris is with the media, and how in control he is. Often seen as bumbling fool or a buffoon but these give a total lie to that! (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I was impressed with the conference as he was certainly different from the last time I watched him speak. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Certainly been like this for the two press conferences he has done on this during this week. Very statesman like! Certainly impressed me. This has shown again, as with Brexit, he will do what he thinks is right no matter what others say or think. (edited) 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb Planning on picking up books tomorrow. I guess this is what we‘ve been practicing for. We all have tons of unread books and we don‘t get insane if isolated. Books rule! 5y

The Key to Rebecca | Ken Follett
post image
Pickpick

I do think Follett is one of the greatest storytellers ever, and not a single book thus far has disappointed me. That been said, WWII and fiction does not really work for me. Too much focus on that time period, too many books. Follett however always makes even these books interesting, and this time the book is set in Egypt. Germans vs English. Spies. Rommel. And, my fave thing; the book Rebecca by Dauphne Du Maunier. 3,5 stars #kenfollettbuddyread

EadieB Nice review! 5y
BookishMe The heft of his books weren't a pull factor for me. That reference to the classic is main reason I will this a go! 5y

Our February #KenFollettBuddyRead is something completely different. It‘s a true story about the Middle East hostage crises. Supposed to be another good one! Follett surely is a versatile author.

Andrew65 Thanks 😊 5y

Eye of the Needle | Ken Follett

Pickpick

Another solid Follett #KenFollettBuddyRead but not one of my favourites. Sadly, I am pretty much done with WWII fiction, so it has to be exceptional for me to rage about it. Hitler is fully relying on one man, the Needle, to give him the info to beat the Brits. It‘s about the time up to D-Day, and the Needle‘s journey through Britain. Will the Brits catch him or not?

EadieB @Tove_Reads Nice review! Will be reading this soon. 5y
Andrew65 This is on hold at the library so waiting for that hold to come in. I thought about that when I saw it was another WWII book @Tove_Reads 5y

Would it be OK to read this one next for #KenFollettBuddyRead in January (next week!!)? It‘s not the next in line, but I have one of those weird two in one books from the library, so I would have to borrow it again otherwise. Supposed to be another really good one!

Andrew65 Fine by me. 5y
EadieB Ok! 5y

Started the November book in the #KenFollettBuddyRead which I am reading with @EadieB and @Tove_Reads
This is a #chunkster at 672 Pages. Sure it will be another great story by Ken Follett.

RachelAmphlett I love his books! 5y
Andrew65 @RachelAmphlett He is a great author, don‘t think I‘ve ever been disappointed. 5y
Crazeedi I have to see if I've ever read this one, not sure, but I think not 5y

Tove_Reads Are you enjoying it? 5y
Andrew65 Finished now and did enjoy it, quite different to some, very character driven. 5y
Tove_Reads Yes, I enjoyed it as well, but it‘s not one of my faves. Was a bit slow in the beginning, building up to what it was all about was a bit too long for me. But, then again, many characters. In that way it felt like a Binchy 😂 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I think I‘d agree with al, you‘ve said, good but not a favourite. 5y

The Hammer of Eden | Ken Follett
post image

It‘s September so starting the next book in the #KenFollettBuddyRead which I am doing with @Tove_Reads and @EadieB
Others are more than welcome to join us, this is very low key and informal, with each person reading it at their own speed and to their own schedule.
This will be my audiobook for the commute next week in the first week of the new term.
Hopefully it will be as great as the other books we have read.

Tove_Reads Would Ken ever let us down? 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Hopefully not. 🤞 5y
Tove_Reads Been desperately looking for it today. Turns out I‘d turned it upside down and therefore totally confused myself. I feel so smart at the moment. 5y

EadieB @Andrew65 At a family picnic today so will have to start it tomorrow. @Tove_Reads 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB No rush as likely to be reading it most of this week. @Tove_Reads Enjoy the family time Eadie. 😊 (edited) 5y
Melissa_J I know I read this one, but I can‘t remember a thing about it! 5y
Crazeedi I haven't read this(I don't think). I'm going to look for it 5y
Andrew65 @Melissa_J Can often be the case with some books and others stay in your mind so strongly. 5y
Andrew65 Priest certainly doesn‘t seem to be working out as the intelligent criminal mastermind. At 48% and enjoying the book, although wasn‘t convinced by first 10%. @EadieB @Tove_Reads (edited) 5y

EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Looks good to me! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks 😊 6y
Tove_Reads Wow, I was beat once I got back home. I guess I missed my own bed 🙂 Otherwise it looks good to me, but you will probably have to read The Last Girl without me. I‘ve asked the library to get both a physical and an ebook. They add English ebooks around the 15th. It just sometimes takes longer than expected because I guess they have to deal with getting the rights first. 6y
