This is an old fashion not very suspenseful thriller built around the scheming maneuvers and complications caused on the London's art market by a rumor regarding the potential appearance of a new and uncatalogued Modigliani masterpiece. Nice story but without a very surprising ending.

tokorowilliamwallace I think I like the older style drama suspense (60s, 70s, 80s) much better than contemporary. Same with SFF, as there's so much more conceptualisation and imagination that comes with it; it's not afraid to be exploratory, experimental, and weird. 1y
IuliaC @tokorowilliamwallace I agree, this is why I picked this one, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would 1y
tokorowilliamwallace @IuliaC The only older/backlist Ken Follett I own is The Man From Petersburg. So hopefully I will be in the mood for that soon. 1y

I went to a neighborhood Little Free Library to get rid of my Peter Pan book and came home with this one. It's a little-known early (1976) Follett published pseudonymously in England before he became famous.

LindaLappin I read this years ago.

SRWCF @LindaLappin I've never read anything by him, but I of course own A few of his books 3y

#TheModiglianiScandal #KenFollett #BookSpinBingo #Jan2021 #BFC21

This is one of Follett‘s earlier books. A “lost masterpiece” becomes the ultimate prize for an art historian, an angry young painter and a desperate gallery owner. Major themes include theft, forgery, betrayal and even murder. Not a typical Follett book but still an enjoyable read. Recommend to those who like books with interesting characters.

Lynnsoprano Read that years ago. His earlier books were kind of all over the place, but I don‘t think I‘ve read anything he‘s written that I haven‘t liked. 4y
EadieB @Lynnsoprano I have liked all his books too! 4y

Too tired to read now that I‘m back home. Will hopefully finish the book tomorrow!

EadieB @Tove_Reads Looks like you had a great time. I haven't started the book yet. I have been spending a lot of time downsizing my library and have mailed over 600 books to people on my swap sites and have many more to get rid of. My daughter and granddaughter will be moving back home next week and I am trying to clear out their bedrooms so working on that feverishly! 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Something you‘d eventually have to do anyway, but yeah, I bet it‘s a lot of work. Is it a good or a bad thing they are moving? 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads My daughter lost her job at the University of Virginia and wanted to move back home anyway. She is having a very hard time with Covid19 and she wants no part of wearing masks and vaccine. Her daughter is autistic and will not handle wearing a mask so she will be home-schooled. My daughter believes in all these conspiracy theories that consume her life. She does not want to participate in the new world order. to be continued 4y

EadieB @Tove_Reads She believes that the government or whoever is behind her conspiracies is trying to control everyone and the vaccine will have microchips to track everyone. I don't handle her theories or obsessions about these subjects too well so it's best I spend a lot of time in my bedroom reading. She has been a handful all her life. Thank god my husband is patient because I am not. She tells me that I am the worse mother ever and I'm a failure. 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads If you don't agree with her then she lashes out and even blocked her step-brother because he didn't agree with her. My other daughter doesn't say much she just listens and I think Meredith thinks she agrees with her but I know differently because Kristin tells me that she thinks her sister is crazy. Aren't you glad you asked how things will be? How is she going to get another job if she doesn't want to wear a mask? (edited) 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Oh boy, tough times ahead. I do understand you, have someone a bit like that in the family, but more focused on criticizing everyone about everything, thinking she‘s dying out of every disease, coming up with things that are not true etc. would not ever be able to share a house with her... I have read about these conspiracy believers in the USA, but you never think you‘d know anyone yourself. 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Oh no... that‘s a lot to handle! You better take care of yourself! I understand that when you‘re an autistic child things are different, so that part I get. The part about grownups being totally insane is different. I hope this arrangement won‘t last for too long. Must be hard because naturally you love her, but that‘s just waaay to much 😥 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads She also said that ever since she was a little girl that she has had visions about all that is going on. There are a lot of conspiracy theories going around and that the virus was sent to cause Trump problems. The theories are that O'bama, Pelosi (Speaker of the House) Clintons and Biden are behind the virus. I don't know what to believe but Trump is suppose to let everyone know what's going on after the election. (edited) 4y
Tove_Reads @Eadie it‘s tough when she‘s a capable adult who could handle life and could take care of herself, but then makes it very hard for herself. At least you‘ll get to read a lot! A teeny tiny little silver lining. Are you also baby sitting or teaching? 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Also lots of theories about Bill Gates wanting to lessen the population and using the vaccine. Lots of movie stars like Tom Hanks, Ellen deGeneres and all the stuff with child pornography and Prince Andrew, the Clintons being involved with Jeffrey Epstein and his girlfriend. Everything is going to hit the fan as she is telling all the secrets. (edited) 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Yeah, Bill Gates keeps on popping up when people are talking about conspiracy theories and vaccine. 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads No I'm not babysitting anymore because my other daughter is still working at her vet hospital and her husband has been working all these months too so they don't want me to catch anything because of my compromised immune system.

My daughter, Meredith, does a lot of research and I think she scares herself. I just want her to be happy but she goes around telling everyone all these theories. She sounds crazy and then gets mad at people.
(edited) 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Understandable! Worried what your grandchild will learn during her home-schooling. 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB She can‘t have it easy either. Must be hard to not fit in and people most likely avoiding her. Not easy being her parent either. 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I'll probably end up trying to teach Evie something. I told my daughter that she needs to focus more on her daughter instead of all this other stuff. She and her ex-husband have been teaching her stuff. Meredith does the English and other subjects and her father does math and science since my daughter does not like those subjects. But Evie's father is staying in Virginia. Evie will surly miss her father and when she gets upset ..... (edited) 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Teach her magic, a.k.a literature! 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads The school in Virginia was great. All the kids loved Evie and she made lots of friends. She just does not communicate too much and she has her favorite foods which that's all she eats. Mainly Grilled Cheese, Pizza, Mac and Cheese. Her teacher that shadows her was getting her to eat chicken fingers and working on other things with her. That school was great for her. Will probably have to put her in school when the mask wearing is done. 4y
Susanita @EadieB Yikes! It‘s all so tiresome. Lou Holtz was on faux news last night spouting all the standard hoax/conspiracy theories and a few new ones, and it was all I could do not to shout at the TV. I knew he was a blowhard, but this was next level. 4y
EadieB @Susanita I can't handle all this stuff. Plus my daughter has personality disorders and she blames me for everything because she said I was a terrible mother and never understood her. I guess I wasn't too bad as her sister became a veterinarian and I get along fine with her. She thinks her sister is the problem and is not looking forward to her coming home. 4y
Susanita @EadieB Oof. I‘m sorry. This pandemic is bad enough without so many folks being difficult on top of it. You‘re a good mom to provide them a home! I‘m sending good thoughts your way. 4y
EadieB @Susanita Thanks! I need good thoughts. 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB I fell asleep with the phone in my hand 😃 Hopefully is Littens can keep you good company during the challenging times. I always find comfort in books, I‘m sure you do too! 4y

Decent read with a few twists. It was interesting to go back and read one of Follett's earlier works.
