panI finished this book before Thanksgiving but didn't take the time to review it. I was so disappointed! I should have checked the author's credentials: she is by no means a scholar writing "a piquant history of feasting." She's simply an enthusiast & that just isn't enough for me. Her dining obsessions tend to override important information about feasting. For example, why include a chapter on cannibalism ?, and gloss over North American customs?!
Hobbinol Much more interesting was her own dinner parties. In the context of this book, her personal stories seemed oddly placed. If only she'd written solely about her own experiences recreating some historic recipes and taken the time to explain her processes more fully-- that would have made for an interesting book. Even her obsession with venison would have made an interesting subject alone. 8y
