Pickpick

Kayleigh works at a social media platform as a moderator, reviewing uploaded content and deciding what can stay up and what has to be removed – she watches hundreds of videos depicting violence, child abuse, animal abuse, self harm and acts of terrorism every day. It's an interesting premise and I really liked the way this book was written, but it ended so abruptly and without any real closure. 😔

Nol Rieske is a boy who is very sensitive to the emotions of other people (in that way I do understand the comparison with Proust, @Liz_M ).
At a garden party, he meets his piano teacher's daughter, and he will never again be able to get her out of his mind. Their mutual love and admiration for music (for example Bizet‘s opera Carmen) isn‘t enough however: Nol's desperate love for her inevitably leads to a catastrophe.

Liz_M It may have been the translation, but the moody, dense, wordiness also felt Proustian to me. 😀 Nice review! 3y
BarbaraBB @Liz_M That is true. It reads a bit Proustian. I read a lot of Vestdijk in my life and I didn‘t notice that earlier but I guess you are right. 3y

This book is written by a co-worker and I was a bit skeptical (why the NYC setting and the election of Trump?) but beside these two things it is just a good book about millennials with all their chances, their FOMO and Gen Z about to take over - forcing them to finally grow up and take responsibility.

squirrelbrain Phew, that‘s a relief! I always worry about reading books by people I know, in case I don‘t like them. 4y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I did worry! But it really was a good book. 😅 4y
dylanisreading I am offended on behalf of all millennials. 😂 4y
BarbaraBB @Bianca Oh I‘m sorry I was not trying to be offensive, it is the plot line 😀 4y
Cuilin #outdoorart 👍 sounds like an interesting read. 4y

Mehso-so

I found this book raw and very readable until the last 40 pages or so when it took a turn I was not expecting and didn‘t fully understand. Trigger warnings for animal abuse.

BarbaraBB I felt the same. Have you been reading it in Dutch? 5y
BookishTrish No, in English. A friend got me an Ebook copy of the first Harry Potter in Dutch and I‘m gearing up to try it. 5y
