Enjoying a bit of outside reading 😄
“Spider-Man/Kingpin: To the Death“ sounds good on paper, being a reunion of Stan Lee and John Romita, and while JR's pencils were still classic and clean, Stan's schtick felt hokey and stale. The story was plotted by Tom DeFalco, and was okay, if nothing startlingly original.
While it was good to read a Spidey & Daredevil team-up, it's 3🕸️ for me.
While there are some genuinely emotional moments, this final Spider-Gwen arc just doesn't hold together. Latour tries to cram too much into five issues--a single issue is spent on a year Gwen spends in prison for reasons that don't make a ton of sense. Gweb's reconciliation with her father, bandmates, and Venom needed more finesse.
Did you know that Daredevil's yellow suit only appeared in his first 4 issues? I bought this book a while ago with a couple other Daredevil titles, intending to read them around the same time, but since Tim Sale's death, I decided to read this one at least. A sort of Year One story, Matt is writing a letter to Karen (who has died?) looking back on their early time together. A perfect intro for those who watched the Netflix shows.
This graphic novel introduces the character Echo, who is going to have her own Disney+ series. Echo/Maya is Native American and deaf. She and Matt/Daredevil could be on the verge of a romance or killing each other if Wilson Fisk has his way. https://cannonballread.com/2021/11/daredevil-parts-of-a-hole-elcicco/
4✨ Considering our main Gwen is in the wrong dimension and we see about 4 different Gwen universes I enjoyed it. This should be the last volume and I‘ve read the other it has just been a while.
I enjoyed the 2nd volume of this She-Hulk collection!!! I loved the combo of both her lawyer and superhero skills. There was also a good amount of other cool superheroes such as Ant-Man and Hellcat. Each character was fleshed-out and complex. The art is well-done. I was engaged throughout the entirety of the volume. These comics further instilled just how awesome She-Hulk is. I am excited to read more She-Hulk comics!
If you liked the third season of Daredevil on Netflix, you'll enjoy Frank Miller's story of Matt Murdoch's near destruction at Kingpin's hands.
