A fairly standard police procedural but set in 2051: near future yet not disappearing into dystopia. Very readable, the near future element entirely realistic and scary, the “figuring out the crime/scare vibes” just what I wanted.

A prequel to the Agatha Raisin series (#SeriesLove2024) that is set as Agatha begins her PR business. It was okay and like many novella struggled to truly tell the story. Not at all necessary to reading the rest of the series.

TheSpineView Well done! 4mo
Andrew65 Read the whole series but not read this short story. 4mo
Mollyanna @TheSpineView Thanks 😊 4mo
Mollyanna @Andrew65 I wouldn‘t bother reading the short stories, it didn‘t really add anything. I‘m glad it was short. Good to see you back on Litsy 😊 4mo
Andrew65 @Mollyanna Thanks 😍, trying to get some normality and order back. I often feel this way about short stories - just not enough depth to them, and not usually a fan. 4mo

A professional declutterer is used to dealing with unpleasant surprises... but a dead body is new. Interesting premise and backstory, but the prose is often sloppy and the solution of the mystery isn't very satisfying. It almost feels like Brett would rather have been writing a sad, misogynistic novel.

willaful @Texreader Astonishingly enough, no! But filling bingo cards without ever getting a bingo is my superpower. 😂 5mo

I‘m in New Jersey to house sit for the next two weeks. 1. Audiobook to keep me company on the road.
2. We‘ll be going out for pizza for dinner.
3. Yesterday I went for a nature walk at a local park.
4. I reorganized my bookshelves, donated several books, and brought with me enough reading material for two months.
5. I had a good weekend at the ballpark for my last games of the season.

I liked the way this started. It was fun to read the investigation, and see how the detective's thought processes worked. After about half the book, the writing started to feel a little stilted, like the author was checking off an invisible check list. It was a good mystery story but seemed average at the same time.
