I run a little free library and help with some other local book/reading projects. I recently had an insightful conversation with someone who was released from a 3 month county jail sentence. She asked me to donate books to jails, told me what kinds of books are needed, & how important they are to inmates. I'm researching groups online, but does anyone have advice or suggestions for this type of effort? Thanks!
CrowCAH @Ellsbeth I don't have any suggestions or helpful advice, but I wanted to say this sounds like a great cause! 8y
MicheleinPhilly Are you on Twitter? Piper Kerman is an incredible resource for ways to get involved and she does engage when you ask questions. 8y

BookishFeminist Please keep me posted on what you find out, I'd love to include this kind of information in the #overthis syllabus I'm organizing too. 8y
lynneamch I'll check the #overthis, but maybe you could give us a hashtag specific to this request, too. Wally Lamb has the two collections of essays wriiten by women in prison that might be useful. I was moved by the storyline of a cellmate of the protagonist for whom books were a live-saving comfort in 8y

Ellsbeth @MicheleinPhilly I am and that's good to know. Thanks! 8y
Ellsbeth @8little_paws This resource has some cool things. Thank you! 8y
Ellsbeth @BookishFeminist I will! I'm finding there may possibly be a difference in the impact with county vs. federal. I'll keep you posted. 8y
Ellsbeth @mhillis Indeed! I learned this lesson when I had a student incarcerated and I wasn't allowed to send him our hardcover textbook. It was classified as a weapon! 8y
Ellsbeth @lynneamch Thanks for the book suggestions. As for a hashtag, what about something like #booksforinmates #booksthroughbars or #prisonlibrary? 8y
mhillis I didn't realize that was the reason! 8y
