The Mime Order | Samantha Shannon

Pickpick

Most of my reading time this week has been devoted to book 2 in the Bone Season series. Shannon‘s rewrites are less obviously apparent but still work cohesively with the revised book 1 to better tell the story & keep the reader invested.

We learn more about the syndicate as well as Warden & the Ranthen. Paige really finds herself in this book so it‘s my favorite of the series so far. And even knowing it‘s coming, the ending is still shocking!

Pickpick

Let me start by saying I have been a fan of this series since the very beginning. However this is my first time reading the revised text in the 10th anniversary edition.

Shannon takes the unique world & story she originally created & turns it into a masterpiece with this version. This version is so much more readable. She takes the info dumping of the original & turns it into real world building expertly crafted throughout the story. ⬇️

MeganAnn I was immediately swept up in the story and felt like I was almost reading a completely new book, even though Paige and her world remain the one I know and love. I was a diehard Shannon fan before this, but she now has my undying admiration for taking a story she published at 21 and doing the work to revise into this masterpiece at 31. 1mo
MeganAnn If you haven‘t read this series yet, definitely start with this revised version. It is the most unique dystopian, urban fantasy world and I have yet to read anything else quite like it. #boneseasonreread 1mo

MeganAnn @TrishB I‘ve been saving these revised versions to read when book 5 came out so I could continue right into the newest one. Getting my preordered copy in the mail reminded me it was time! 😆 I would LOVE to see her speak one day. ❤️ (edited) 1mo
tpixie She was a college student when she 1st wrote this. I remember seeing her on the Today show. I bet her writing has matured! 1mo
MeganAnn @tpixie yes, she was so young & her writing has definitely matured! I follow her on instagram and she‘s posted a lot about how she wanted to revise the first book and make it better and more like she imagined it to be, but wasn‘t yet a good enough writer to pull off. I enjoy her snippets of info on this process. Not many writers have the opportunity (or maybe want) to rework their debut a decade later so the entire thing completely fascinates me. 1mo
tpixie @MeganAnn it is an interesting process. I wonder if there are all under the same editor - wow book one has 200 more pages! https://www.samanthashannon.co.uk/more/revision-guide (edited) 1mo
