Today‘s Book Nook scores to entertain myself over my quiet Easter weekend. Yin yoga this morning really helped with my dicky hip. I need to get myself sorted as I got myself a showgirl gig. It may just be the greatest achievement of my life! The Angelica Banks and Judy Blume are for my book crazy niece. I could have filled another bag but it may not have been a good look. Libraries are the best invention ever. Medicine is great but books are fab.

Bookwormjillk Good luck with your gig! 6d
CarolynM Some great titles there! Congrats on the showgirl gig, sounds like fun 💃 6d

This novel about generational drama I found uneven. The story in London was more compelling to me than the "Then" part set in Australia. Just did not work for me. 2.5 ?

ChaoticMissAdventures I felt the same. I was much more interested in the boyfriend trying to mess with the cat 😂 3w

The review backlog continues. The Echoes pulled at my heartstrings but didn‘t destroy me like I was prepared for..after reading reviews (and the blurb!) I was hesitant to pick it up for fear of being too sad, but I found plenty of moments of levity here. 3 timelines, 2 settings: different perspectives and locations. Max is still lingering after his death, watching Hannah in the London apartment they shared. Hannah remembers her past in Australia.

sarahbarnes I‘ve avoided this for the reasons you described. Good to know it wasn‘t too much for you. 1mo

Have been trying to track down her books in our library system . Most available as ebooks. Disappointing for me. If I were to try an ebook, what device would you suggest ?
Found this in an op shop. Such great writing.
Always makes me sad that she died so young. Such potential, gone. 😢

Suet624 Can‘t help you with an ereader because I don‘t use one but I downloaded kindle onto my iPad and read ebooks that way. Granted I rarely read an ebook so I probably don‘t know what I‘m missing. 1mo
BkClubCare @Suet624 - just piling on that I prefer to read Kindle books via the app on my iPad over using my Kindle device. The iPad kindle app is just so much easier. 1mo
BkClubCare And Wow - she has a lot of books, none of which are available on my Library‘s Libby access. 1mo
CarolynM I also use the kindle app on my iPad and find it very user friendly😊 I really must read more Georgia Blain. Such a very sad loss😢 (edited) 1mo

Check me out, buying a book, and then reading it right away instead of letting it sit on my shelf for months/years first! The things I will do for Evie Wyld. I absolutely loved this, I think it might be her strongest yet.

Hannah is haunted; by the (literal) ghost of her boyfriend Max, by the life in Australia she moved to London to escape, by the unknown traumas her family carries... cont'd in comments 👇

TheKidUpstairs and by the land she grew up on, itself haunted by the blood and bones of those who were there before. Cont'd 👇 2mo
TheKidUpstairs
Wyld excels in restraint. She gives us just enough of each character's story to understand how trauma can echo through generations, without weighing down the book with too many tangled threads. Just enough glimpses of the interconnected moments to carry through the tale. Just enough answers to begin to understand, but enough questions left to keep you thinking.

I will read anything she writes.

squirrelbrain Great review! Loved this but I haven‘t read any others by this author - where should I start? 2mo

TheKidUpstairs @squirrelbrain The Bass Rock was one of my favourites a couple years ago, so I'd start there! 2mo
TheKidUpstairs @squirrelbrain All the Birds, Singing was also really good. Stylistically similar to The Echoes. The only one I haven't read is her debut, but I'll definitely be seeking it out! 2mo
BarbaraBB Thanks for the review and the recommendations. I want to read more Wyld too after loving The Echoes! 2mo
squirrelbrain Thanks, Megan - I‘ll look into those. (After all of the WP books! 🤪) 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I really loved the bits with the cat 😂. I am sure that isn't what the author wants to hear but that was my favorite parts! 2mo
Lindy Good on you! I leave purchased books languishing on my bookshelf forever too, reading library books instead. 😆 2mo
TheKidUpstairs @ChaoticMissAdventures oh my, when he pushes the cat into the bath 🤣🤣🤣🤣 2mo

I ADORE Evie Wyld and her beautifully messy, complex women. So last summer when I read she had a new book I immediately ordered it, even though I knew I'd have to wait awhile for its North American release. The day is finally here! I'm almost finished another book, but plan to start this one today. Buying a book and starting to read it in the same day?!?! THAT'S how much I love her.

squirrelbrain It‘s so good! ❤️ 2mo
Suet624 Jeepers. I ordered this so long ago. I hope it arrives soon. 2mo
BarbaraBB Great cover! And the book is very good 2mo

A group of crochet enthusiasts get together to craft, fight racism, and support each other in Australia. I needed something straightforward with a happy ending this week.

This didn't really work for me, which is a bummer because I think there were 2 good ideas here that were combined and it caused neither of them to be as effective as they could have been alone.
I loved the idea of Max as a ghost watching as life moves on after he passed, though I disliked the glimpses we see of predeath Max, what an a'hole. I think the point was to show generational trauma being passed down but with all the time jumps 👇

ChaoticMissAdventures And pov switching in such a short book I never felt immersed enough with any part of the story. I felt the earlier generation was not flushed out enough, and absolutely disliked the ending. I am bummed b/c if it had been both reigned in and expended places this could have been wonderful, overall though I felt a bit bored. I really didn't like how the Aboriginal mentions seemed to be just tossed in as if she knew she needed to but didn't want to 3mo
ChaoticMissAdventures This came out last year in AU but will not be out until next week in the US 3mo
