Oh, he did his best to make their short lives miserable, because that was his job, but nothing he could think up was half as bad as the stuff they thought up themselves. They seemed to have a talent for it. It was built into the design, somehow. They were born into a world that was against them in a thousand little ways, and then devoted most of their energies to making it worse.”
pick(2016) Here's a mostly-excellent collection of apocalyptic and postapocalyptic stories featuring protagonists with disabilities. Standouts for me are Stephanie Gunn's "To take into the air my quiet breath," about sisters with cystic fibrosis who survive a global plague; and John Chu's "Selected afterimages of the fading," about an apocalypse in which inattention causes the world to fade. I also quite liked Janet Edwards's "I will remember you."

pickLoved this book. It‘s not a new story (big meteor about to crash into earth), but it‘s so well written from several seemingly unrelated points of view. In the end it all comes together beautifully. 👍
pickI liked the basic story. It is a good apocalyptic survival story. Although we never get a real idea of why Ben has survived untouched while everyone else is affected.
I did not like the way Ben's weight was treated by the other characters and also by himself. There is a lot of hateful speech that wasn't really necessary. The story would have been just as interesting without all the insults and fat phobia.
