An Unkindness of Ghosts | Rivers Solomon

Pickpick

This is the best space sci-fi I‘ve read in a long time. It‘s fascinating, smart, harrowing, & propulsive. The main character is non-binary & neurodiverse & relatable & awesome. As much as I hate to bring a deplorable bigot into this, I kept thinking while reading: Eat your heart out, Orson Scott Card! Solomon tackles tough issues (not just space science stuff, but real, big issues), but never detracts from the riveting & engrossing story. So good.

RealLifeReading Sounds great! 6y
saresmoore @RealLifeReading I was really impressed! I think you‘ll like it. 6y

Lindy Great review! 6y
saresmoore @Lindy I almost didn‘t review it because I thought yours was so good, but I figured the land of instant gratification could use a reminder of what an exceptional book it is. 6y
Lindy @saresmoore Indeed. 😉 6y
batsy You and @Lindy have sold me on this! From the land of instant gratification and short-term memory, I thank you 😁 6y
Lindy @batsy 😇 6y

Not just a closer look at what went down at Theranos, but since the author was the whistle-blower with his WSJ story - it‘s also a timely look into journalism today - during a time when journalists are still blackmailed and extorted and stories get killed every day. People like Elizabeth Holmes get rich at the expense of the public and then use that as power to continue to elude people. 🤬

This was my pick for #booked2019 #relatedtoapodcast

saresmoore Are you counting this for #ReadHarder as a business book or written by/about a journalist? #allthereadingchallenges 6y
LauraBeth @saresmoore I am! I ran out of space to mention it 😂 I think this should be required reading for all B School students. 6y

Cinfhen Just picked this up last week. I‘m looking forward to reading it!! 6y
LauraBeth @Cinfhen It‘s really good! My only gripe (and it‘s a minor one) is that the author introduces a LOT of characters and they can be difficult to keep track of at times. 6y
batsy Cat in a box! 🐱 6y

Mehso-so

This was sweet and light, though not special. It‘s a glimpse into the dynamics and frustrations between generations of a Taiwanese/Chinese-American family from the perspective of a young adult daughter during her first year as a pre-med student at MIT. The writing is not bad, but not good, either. There were some glaring editorial faux pas and the story was set up too predictably. Still, I appreciated the fleshed out cultural dynamics.

LauraBeth I love your # 😀 6y
saresmoore @LauraBeth It‘s much simpler this way! 😅 6y
LauraBeth I may have to co-opt it! 6y

Lucy and Linh | Alice Pung

This book completely surprised me! What a gem. It's a YA novel, centered almost completely on the circumstances of high school, but it's also intelligent, insightful, and wholly unexpected—not juvenile or contrived. Alice Pung is a gifted writer and storyteller and her unique perspective (the reason I picked up this book) is just an added bonus. I thoroughly enjoyed this and plan to read more from the author.

saresmoore Read for #allthereadingchallenges due to the narrative on immigration. 8y

I can't believe I managed to clock 22 hours of reading! My brain grew three sizes, I think. Now I'm off to read myself to sleep with a fantasy book that has a weapon for a title, written by an author my age for #allthereadingchallenges.

Many congratulations to all those who participated in #24in48 and for those who made it to 24 hours, I bow in humble admiration.

I think all this reading has made me a bit punchy! Fais de beaux rêves, Littens!

GypsyKat That's fantastic! Great job!!! 8y

It almost feels too vulnerable to review this book. How Toews was able to write this is beyond my understanding. The story is tangibly real to me. The writing is brilliant and gorgeous. It's an unequivocal pick.

Bibliogeekery Such a powerful book! 8y
JacqMac I loved this book. It hit me deep. 8y

BooksForEmpathy Perfect review. It's such a beautiful book. 8y
saresmoore @Bibliogeekery It really is. It's going to take a few days (weeks?) to sink in, I think. 8y
saresmoore @JacqMac Same. I made it most all the way through the book without shedding a tear, but when she referred to singing "I Wonder as I Wander," I just sat there and cried for a minute. 8y
saresmoore @BooksForEmpathy I mean, how can you really "review" it? It's special. I'm looking forward to reading more from Toews. 8y
